What a big, proud cat! I love his expression and proportions, the detail of her markings, big strong jaw and muzzle. You've captured the likeness. Individual cats' proportions vary and she's got a big muzzle, but the space between her ears is more feminine and she's got the proportions of a female -- the key to my sexing her is her markings and the elegant way you caught the patch of ginger that transforms her tabby markings right on her forehead.

Cats' markings are unique even when they have a common pattern like tabby. Hers are striking, the M on her forehead is distinct but runs into her ginger stripe, the light patches around her brilliant eyes are gorgeous. Anyone who knew her would recognize her. I'd recognize her if I met her after seeing this portrait.

My guess is that you used pastel pencils or drawing pencils in sanguine and neutral tones on colored paper, something I did a lot back when I was a street sketcher. The effect of working up and down from a middle tone is a lot of fun, and it's also a quick dramatic way to vignette a portrait.

Tufty is awesome. I love cats and put Tufty among my favorites because this reaches out to me so deep. I really need to sell some novels, maybe when I've recovered from my doctor visit this afternoon I'll click on Tufty again and think about how you'd draw Ari, my nearly five year old companion and fluffy monitor decoration. It's rare for me to want to commission someone else's art, especially for anything I could draw well... but you've just made it to my wish list!

Its lovely to hear someone talk about Tufty like that, I might show this to my mum Sadly Tufty died early this year, we still miss her, and I'm glad I got to draw this for my mum before.

I would love to see a photograph of your Ari if you have one, she sounds beautiful I look forward to one day being able to draw her

I am so sorry to hear that Tufty died, and so glad you did her portrait before she did! She's now got her own little piece of my heart too.

Sure! I'll dig out a couple of my good Ari photos and post them in Scraps or as Deviations. I have lots. He's a very photogenic cat. He's still growing at almost five years old, he had another growth spurt and is finally growing into his feet. When he was six to nine months old his paws grew huge, and on top of that he has light colored long tufts between his toes like snowshoes.

He has thick fluffy fur, seal points and a trace of tabby markings between his points and the smooth light brown tones of his body -- his whole body is a range of cream to tan shades that's utterly gorgeous. His eyes aren't bright blue but silver-blue and he's a tom with a very wide large head, ears spaced nicely apart, white whiskers springing out of his dark face in a contrast that would come up great in oils or pastels and be the devil to paint in watercolor without using Chinese white.

His full name is Aristophenes Mr. Robert's Cat Sloan, and he's very devoted. He often climbs into my lap and snuggles while I'm writing, reading or playing computer games, something that taught me to type one-handed sometimes. He also likes to chew my sleeves. "Woolbiting" is a particularly Siamese habit that I hadn't heard of till I found it on someone's website about the breed. Before that I thought he was just weird, now I know it's his Siamese ancestry leading him to mangle my t-shirts and sweaters. I ought to make him a special real wool catnip mouse sometime since he likes it so much.

His hair's fluffy like your grandmother's dog, long and hanging down silky instead of puffy like a Himalayan or Persian. He's an applehead so his facial proportions are more "standard cat" than either a pushed-in Persian face or a long Siamese snout.

He's sitting up on the divider watching. I swear he knows it when I'm typing about him! lol

That's amazing, the way you did the colors and the markings makes it look so soft.
