Description
In 1998, on 7th of September a fourteen year old boy named Arto Pakkanen lost his life a hundred and fifty meters away from where this photo of the railway was taken.Arto was cycling home from a school disco when the three young men aged 17, 18 and 19 stopped him on a narrow pathway. Without any apparent motive, the three soon attacked Arto. They kicked him and stabbed him 112 times with a knife. Finally they dropped a stone weighing 13kg (29 pounds) on Arto's head. Twice. Crushing the boys skull completely.

I'm exceptionally unsure about this. I think the post-processing is a bit too much and I could have gone with just the picture of the railroad. Then again it looks like "it's 2007 and I just found photoshop". Cringey yet nostalgic.Β

It's perfect in my opinion. This one really caught my eye from the thumbnails.
The photo line up and the post-process goes well with the story. Makes the story more alive.

Hello Mr. T. The "caught my eye from the thumbnail" class is truly interesting. How often do I click a thumbnail only to disappoint, and how often do I find something that is fascinating beyond words. Rather, what the hell in those microscopic images makes us click. I haven't figured out my personal pattern.Β
I find your feedback very encouraging. Thank you. Or as we say around here: kiitti vitusti.Β

There are no words to comment on what happened to the boy. There is cruelty in all of men and sometimes, in some cases, it gets out of control. It can reach all of us if we find ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. The boy had no chance to save himself. Unfortunately. Despite the weight of this story I like how the photo is done.

Thank you for your wonderful comment. First time in a long while I was really hoping for some feedback and I'm so relieved the little I've gotten it has all been positive

Thanks. In case it was unclear, the story is true.Β

It actually looks like it was taken on out of date film with a camera that has a small light leak. I love it though the story that goes with it is horrific.Β

I wanted the pictures to look somehow distorted and hazy in an unpleasant way. Yet not to lose all detail. To be honest, there wasn't much to photograph and it was pure luck to have the sun in that particular direction. Just flat land and nothingness.
For some time I thought I could catchΒ some little boy with a bicycle going down the path or across the railway (I saw some people walking dogs nearby), but after crouching in the bushes for an hour - it was already very, very late-Β I came to the conclusion that I seem like a murder-rapist myself and it might just be too cheesy to have an actual boy in the picture.Β
Oh yeah, all the killers are free men nowadays. One of their brother also committed a murder some years later. He stabbed his best friend - lacking a motive, as he himself has confessed. Unmotivated violence is fascinating. Madness that runs in the family is double fascinating.Β Β
