Description
Things have been very busy for the past several months so I have had little time for new artwork, but I'm happy to introduce my recently finished piece called "First Light". In this scene I'm illustrating an exo-moon which circles a beautiful blue gas giant similar to our own planet Neptune. The moon on which the scene is placed is rather mountainous and as we watch, the first morning light from a distant sun is rising over the rugged terrain casting long streaks of golden light across clouds which lie between the mountain ranges.I rendered the terrain using Vue 2015 while the planet, moon, and stars were all added using Photoshop. The gas giant began life as my previously uploaded Saturn which can be found here fav.me/d8f7djy

You were right -- gorgeous rings! Did you follow a reference or a tutorial for those, or was it experimentation?

Look here...
Tutorial - Planet Rings
This is a little over complicated but its close to what I do in Photoshop. One trick to make it look good though is to work BIG. Make rings 10k pixels wide if you can, then squeeze them down to fit your scene. And pay close attention to how the shadow of the ring should look across the planet, or how the planets shadow falls across the rings themselves. It's details like that that can really make a scene. Check out real images of Saturn online for reference...

Thanks! Will try incorporating rings into some of mine once I get the trick of it.

Thank you very much! I still have much to learn in Vue, but I'm getting better

The long streaks of golden light also appear to me as a wide river of lava dividing the ranges. I also appreciate the division between the roughness of the landscape and the more serene spacescape. This excellent work inspires me toward some science fiction writing.

Thanks for the comments. I have always been interested in contrasting the rugged and sharpness of a landscape with the smooth tranquility of a planet in space art. I'm glad it inspires you...
