I do seriously think there should be more male ponies in the show, to add more spice.
Also I actually like to hear their take on some eletronica. The Equestria Girls version of the main theme was superior to me.

It's a show for little girls, that tends to focus more on problems girls have, therefore there's going to be more visible female characters than male.
At least, that's my justification for it. It makes it easier to set up cliche'd scenarios like having one gorgeous guy in the entire school, methinks.Β

Pay attention. There are many male ponies, but they're all working at the construction sites or other "heavy" jobs, that's why we rarely see any.
Well, that still doesn't explain the imbalance at school, but it's something.

Considering the last season had a lot of Lyra AND Bon Bon, plenty of carrot top, another VScratch apperance, more Time Turner, Trixie in one of the seasons' best episodes, more male characters in speaking roles, and Derpy despite being officially banned by Hasbro - this picture was pretty prophetic!
