Description
--::Accessing United Nations Department of Emergency Response, Xenoform Database Alpha Kai, Registered Kaiju::--
Classification: Anomaly
Callsign: U-2
Common Name: Umbardos
First Seen: Chicago Ruins
Last Seen: Antarctic Coast
Primary Range: Global
Dietary Preference: Organic Matter
Official Description: Umbardos in unmistakable, even if it rarely ever looks one consistent way. It's violet-hued, amorphous body can move and alter itself any which way, making description difficult, but the row of teeth and single yellow eye alone have sent many people into a panic. It's death toll is catastrophic, its combat skill is almost unequaled, and it's self esteem knows no limits.
Defense Protocols: If Umbardos should emerge, all available long range weaponry is to be deployed instantly with no holdup. It is exceedingly dangerous, an extinction level event of unparalleled strength, but unlike most kaiju, it does not regenerate quickly. You can wound and deplete it's mass and even theoretically kill it, but the simple fact is that is nearly impossible. Deploy Rigel as a last resort, but be careful it does not learn too much from the encounter. If you can, bait Storbek into the area, or even better, Rajar. They are particularly well equipped to deal with it. And if you really need a Hail Mary, pray to Grorn. Just accept your home will become a diamond crater in doing so.
Noteworthy Abilities:
-Amorphous Anatomy: Umbardos' body plan is technically little more than a slowly rolling pile of purple ooze that absorbs all biomass in its path, but it's absorbed knowledge from it's victims and prior form allows it to exhibit immense creativity in how it shapes itself, learning to use trapped condensed air in place of bones and how to harden it's edges into blades and teeth. The only limits are acquired biomass and imagination, making it extremely deadly as an opponent.
-Adaptive Genetics: Perhaps more than any other kaiju, Umbardos is masterfully skilled at piecing together the perfect little genetic morsels of whatever it happens to be ruminating upon. The results are rarely seen, it likes the form it currently takes too much to change it.
-Eclipse Beam: A secretive ability it acquired after absorbing the alpha Phadron, Umbardos can launch a beam of concentrated dark matter at whatever is in it's path through the jaws that usually can be found on it's body.
-Teleportation: Another ability acquired via the Phadron, Umbardos can enter the Idiom for short spans of time, emerging several meters away from its entry point. It appears to cost visible amounts of biomass to accomplish this, making it a rare move.
-Regen Damper: An ability born of it's origins with the KT Virus, Umbardos can utilize any little bit of it's anatomy to get inside of their body and begin countering their natural healing, making it especially deadly for most kaiju to fight. This equalizing agent is perhaps the one thing that allows it to survive energy attacks, as its own regeneration is quite slow.
Behavioral Observations: Umbardos is without a doubt the most humanlike kaiju we've witnessed, both in anatomy and personality. It thinks, it feels and it processes information in a way that we would all find familiar, but it has the worst of our attributes brought to the fore. Namely, it believes itself to be perfect, and when that is challenged it takes immense personal offense and will accost the threat to it's status. When not in combat, it simply strolls about and feeds on whatever is nearby, ending with a lot of ghost towns and barren fields. And in combat, it toys with its opponents in a manner resembling a bullfighter, misdirecting and then slicing in with bladed implements a few cells thick, delivering a viral concoction and greatly impeding the enemy's ability to heal.
EDITORIAL: Okay, so, gotta be honest. This one scares me more than any other on this list. It barely deserves a spot here, it should be listed in a category all it's own. But it has very strong ties to kaiju in it's origins, so explanations are needed. So, if you recall, Umbara was killed through a combined assault of magnetic fury and a tailored polyDNAvirus created by Doctor Allison Gaither. That virus was a very popular anti-kaiju agent for a brief window of time, it was initially UNDER's biggest bargaining chip in legitimizing themselves as a proper defense force. But unfortunately, we couldn't have that win for long.
As I explained before, the eastern seaboard of the US was a battleground for many years, with most civilization in shambles or long evacuated. We came to call it the Waste, and I made something of a name for myself there, driving about and documenting the activities of the kaiju that roamed it when few would. It made me something of an expert and was my initial point of contact with UNDER. But there was a white whale, not literally, that always eluded me. A kaiju with abilities that didn't match any in the grove, and unlike the rest, it left no physical evidence. Or anything organic nearby at all. But I could never find or record physical traces. Then I left a camera and was treated to the worst sight of my life. A passing kaiju, a bizarre mix of songbirds and snakes on top of a deer body, was accosted from belowground by an ooze, which trapped and literally absorbed it into it's mass. Slowly. It wasn't fun to watch.
The scariest part of this creature is that it doesn't just absorb your organic meat, it takes your knowledge too. It knows the layout of a city the second it steps on a person who lives there, and it knows the abilities of military equipment the second a soldier gets too close. And kaiju, or mecha pilots...
Slowly, but surely, Umbardos took center stage of the Waste, slowly moving about and destroying every foe it could find. The actions were almost predatory, like it was hunting them, but it was so eerily slow in how it moved. At first like a black sea of jelly that left everything around it nothing but dust, but gradually assuming more and more of a humanoid form as it passed through settled colonies. You can imagine how that happened, but I'll ask you not to think too hard. It's a dark place to go.
It first tasted defeat against Ganuuk , whose magnetic powers actually caused it a great deal of discomfort, and has held something of a fearful grudge ever since. How do we know this, you ask? My good telepathic friend Paul Gregory found out firsthand and turned into the creature's number one target for a while. That's a story for another day, though, but know it left the creature severely weakened and shrunk down to a fraction of it's size. UNDER would clash with it and it's progeny here and there, and beings like it such as the Amminot Blooms, but it would only truly emerge again after the Syyd business was concluded, absorbing the alpha Phadron and attaining many of it's powers in a true surprise move. Last we saw of it, it was walking into the mainland of Antarctica. I don't like to think about what it's trying to find there.
----------------------------
And now we have our final new file for the night! Umbardos, Umbara's darkest progeny that crawled out of it's spilled, virus infected remains and now serves as one of the most dangerous kaiju in the setting. And to think, it's original form, all those years ago, was Monsterman.
Yup, that's right! This setting has an Ultraman sort of character now, he's just crossed with The Blob and has more of the latter's motivation mixed with some John Carpenter and Perfect Cell. He's a very fun character and I look forward to sharing more about him in the coming days! Until then, stay safe and I'll catch you next time. Peace!
