Description From the Files of Frank Womack, Kaiju Expert*

Kaiju File #  017

Sunajin

First Seen: Fukue Island, Japan
Last Seen: Papua New Guinea

Primary Range:
 Western Pacific Ocean, Greater Indonesia

Dietary Preference: Solar Energy, Thermal Energy

Description:
An unusual Chimera demonstrating many atypical traits compared to the majority of Behemoth-Class kaiju, Sunajin is a large mammalian creature with an omnipedal gait. It is of moderate size among the documented kaiju, with prodigious length owed to it's proboscidae-derived prehensile trunk and it's great, armored tail, which ends with a prodigiously studded thagomizer. It's back is covered in thick, ruddy fur running from the tip of its trunk to the base of it's tail, the rest of the body is primarily covered in thick, natural studded armor of skin and bone, with many spires of said bone protruding from the back, limbs and lower jaw. All in all, a sturdy creature.

But for all it's physical hardiness, it is far from the most tenacious fighter. Despite claims to the contrary (due to the circumstances of it's first emergence) it is far from aggressive and will often turn tail in the face of conflict, preferring to seek out tranquil locations where it can bask in rich, steady sunlight and heavy volcanic heat. It will often end combat as quickly as possible through the use of it's trademark narcotic gas, retreating even though the tactic would also grant it an advantage against it's opponent.

Defense Protocols: Sunajin is firmly located in the lower tiers of threatening kaiju, and often is simply given a wide berth. The reason for this is that provoking this creature tends to end very badly for local infrastructure. The narcotic gas is emits can cause mass devastation through secondhand contact with people, from commuters to construction workers, and in a large metropolitan area the damages can be severe and the lives lost can number in the hundreds and sometimes into the thousands.

Noteworthy Abilities:

-Narcotic Gas: Created internally through unknown means, Sunajin can emit a thick, off-white cloud of gas from its mouth and nose, which can spread over great distances if they catch the wind. Depending on the thickness of said gas, several effects can be examined. At it's thickest, even kaiju larger than itself can experience an immediate loss of consciousness, and can put humans and most local wildlife into a coma for, on average, up to ten hours, though some victims have become completely comatose. But the most common reaction, after significant dilution, is just a sudden case of drowsiness. Either way it can be a deadly tactic in battle against other kaiju, though Sunajin rarely capitalizes on this.

AUTHOR'S NOTES: Been a while, hasn't it? Fellow survivors, your provider of knowledge has no words that can express how sorry I am about my absense these past months, there have been some significant developments in the kaijuology field that I could not ignore. Things had to be put on the back burner for a time, as they often do, but I assure you there is a lot of good stuff on the horizon. But alas, I am a completionist, and it would drive me crazy if I jumped ahead and skipped even the smallest, least significant kaiju sightings and incidents.

And I have a great one, one of the last major ones to occur before we get into the alien invasion! Exciting!

The story of how Kabu  Khan  got it's name.

Several months had passed since the climactic battle in China. Czolgosz  had reappeared in the Siberian wastes but largely was keeping to itself, and Qinguan  was enjoying a burgeoning fame among the local cultures. Neither were causing problems, and despite a few sightings, a small Verminator  outbreak in Northern Australia and Uthegar  performing a dramatic fly-by of Iceland, the world went almost year without significant kaiju-related drama.

That changed one day when a strange fog entered the airspace of the Gotō Islands off the coast of Southern Japan. It started small and inconsequential, people falling asleep at work more than usual (not as bad a thing in their culture as you might think) and children taking excellent naps. But it, for some reason, started building up from there. Drivers started falling asleep at the wheel, eventually a small aircraft careened off the runway though fortunately no one was killed. But that changed as the fog grew thicker over the course of a week. Winters in the Gotō Islands are a gloomy, overcast affair, so it caught people off guard something fierce. Suddenly, we had coma victims and people falling asleep while on their feet, which led to some minor to moderate concussions and a few stitches. Many started wearing breathing masks to get around, and when people began to become fully comatose, mostly the elderly, the experts were called in.

Upon arrival, UNDER troops tried to find a solution to the issue, but that bore little fruit, admittedly. The narcotic gases in the air were already known, but their source was the big mystery. And it was too foggy to comb the nearby ocean for any potential volcanic causes. Many began to worry, preventative measures for earthquakes and tsunamis were put into effect immediately.

Fortunately, the answer, which was far from that severe, came to them. But even if it was less severe, it was still quite violent.

The southernmost island, Fukue, was the first to witness this. The south china sea, on their west coast, was beginning to bubble. And I'm talking jacuzzi bubbles, lots of them all over the place. The locals closest to the coastline, now graduated to full on gas masks, came down to observe, hoping for answers and reaching out to the UNDER team on the next island over. Boy let me tell you, they came running pretty quick when two large kaiju emerged from the depths. One of them was Kabu Khan, the enormous, gilded insect the world had followed from Mongolia to the battle with the giant metal shrew Czolgosz. The other was a new face, and a good deal smaller than the chitinous titan, bearing a mammalian complexion and a long trunk. The two were locked in battle, and the lack of sunlight was doing wonders for the new contender's favor. But that doesn't change the simple different in size and muscle. Every blow from the big beetle was worth half a dozen of the smaller creature. And eventually that began to take it's toll. And it got creative to make up for it.

Without warning, it emitted a concentrated stream of a white gas, and many answers were immediately found as Kabu Khan fell unconscious. This creature, later dubbed Sunajin, the japanese name for the Sandman, was the source, and it somehow had been eking out enormous quantities of this gas from beneath the ocean where it had been previously. Its resemblance to the mythical Baku did not go unnoticed either.

This raised a lot of questions, ones we still don't have answers for, but there's an upside to it. But we'll get there later. I just wanted to let you know that this chapter's darker ending isn't indicative of how the whole story will go.

Sunajin's gas had put the giant beetle to sleep, and it quickly departed the area, swimming off to the south. The circumstances of the battle, which we may never learn, left many scratching their heads. Then the enormous husk of the giant beetle began to crack, and we were introduced to the cycle of death and rebirth the Fiend class of kaiju are now so infamous for. From it's golden shell emerged the giant jaws of it's red and black larval form, and as we all know, this form is one we are NOT happy to see. It swiftly moved inland, devouring whatever matter was in it's path with not a hint of discrimination, and eventually crossed the sea and landing on Honshu island, the largest of the four main Japanese islands. And boy, things got a lot more exciting around that point.

---------------------------------

Hello again! Sorry for the almost three month absence! A combination of work, life changes and indecision about how to proceed with the files all played factors, but I have arrived at a decision on that front and things should run a little smoother for a while.

While I plan out the next couple of arcs I've decided to upload a few more minor files of less consequential characters and creatures. The first is Sunajin, a baku inspired mammalian creature that I've had in the works for a few months now. He's a minor presence and will not be involved in a lot of major events, but these kinds of characters can make a world feel much more full and rich if used well.

Enjoy and feel free to share your thoughts. I've got a couple more faces coming in for this little mini-episode, and I think people are gonna like 'em. Until then, see ya next time!

Correct me if I am wrong, but is he something of a spiritual successor to Solenops?. Either way I quite frankly love his design, it';s so delightfully weird yet has that bulky kaiju style I love from your works, good job.

Sunajin's a nice little trunker, even if he isn't going to get a big part. Those sleep powers are pretty neat.

This won't be the last we see of him, you can be sure of that, he's just not the type to seek the spotlight. In Toho terms, he's more of the Varan sort

Good design.
It is similar to elephant, mammoth and ankylosaur.
