From the Desk of Frank WomackKaiju File # 020
Syyd (Fliertrap Form)
First Seen: Siberian Wastes
Last Seen: Hong Kong, China
Primary Range: Global
Dietary Preference: N/A
Description: Highly specialized, surgical combatants, the Fliertraps emerged in the latter stages of the invasion, after they had encountered substantial resistance in the form of Grorn, the mysterious elemental protective force of our planet. These in many ways replaced the Rootsoldiers that had handled the bulk of the combat up to that point, with a smaller size and a high degree of aerial mobility, they were well equipped to face and battle against hostile forces. Each one is made up of a central, bean shaped node with two curved horns on one end and three straight ones on the other. The front is predominantly occupied by the ever charismatic jaws of a flytrap plant, but unlike previous castes, this one has a recognizable, fully functional pair of eyes on its sides, likely a result of the kaiju cells in their genetic makeup. This body would be immobile were it not for several long, elastic tendrils that extend out from nearly every remaining spot of its body, each ending with some manner of appendage, all of which are deadly to some manner of life. Between many of these tendrils is a thin sheet of organic material that, combined with gases and kaiju biology, allow them to fly at surprising speeds. All in all, they are among the deadliest the Syyd created, snatching up countless lifeforms since their inception and spiriting them away into the sky.
Defense Protocols: The powers that be have been very, very thorough in making sure to address any reported sightings of Syyds. And by address I mean wipe from the face of the earth. Unlike most Syyd castes, the Fliertraps that survived the final battle in Amsterdam have retained a bit of their programming, and will actively engage settled areas in a manner akin to both their masters and the kaiju that stopped them. Anti-air ordinance is usually effective in killing them off, to the point where as of now only two documented survivors remain. But these two have become very crafty and will employ all manner of deception to live another day.
Noteworthy Abilities:
-Syyd Hive-Mind: All Syyd, with a few exceptions, were basically eusocial, obeying the chemical commands of their respective Stalk. These chemical commands were often programmed into their alien nervous system equivalents to where they could even follow them hundreds of miles away. Their programming varied based on caste and the situation. The Fliertrap were designed for multiple purposes, including resource collection and aerial reconaissance and defense, in order to combat the escalating forces rising up against the Stalks. This complex set of commands required a bit more brainpower to carry out, so they have a degree more autonomy than most, which is why they remained after the Hive Mind fell and continue to follow said programming, unlike the Stamions who have basically become animals.
-Genetic Acid: Each Syyd is capable of producing a strange, quite difficult to classify substance, a bright green liquid that functions similarly to an acid, capable of dissolving organic matter into a liquid state. However, it stopped short of total destruction and only broke down the victim into a pool of DNA, and promptly stopped breaking it down and began preserving it. We lack the technology to properly observe what exactly happens here at the genetic level, the liquid seemed to do nothing once separated from its Syyd propagator. It's almost as if it was just as much a Syyd itself and operated with the same level of eusocial intelligence and discrimination. But again, we can't know for sure, and likely never will. Syyd aren't exactly being made anymore, their creators went extinct some time ago, turns out.
-Kaiju Cells: Another unusual aspect of the Fliertrap and much of the other larger castes was the inclusion of Kaiju cells into their genetic makeup. This only started appearing in the second generation of the attacking castes, after the kaiju began fighting back in earnest. This gives them the regenerative powers of their competition, but it also caused them to become a little more on the independent side, often ignoring their chemical commands in favor of more reactive responses to stimuli. A great strength for them, but one even their superior alien tech couldn't completely overpower.
-Energy Battery: An ability given alone to the Fliertraps, each of these winged monstrosities, especially when attacking as a group, could absorb and redirect energy attacks using the strange, floral protuberances on the ends of their stalks. This appears to be an attempt at weaponizing and rerouting an aspect of kaiju cells, and it works surprisingly well.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: As Grorn continued it's effortless onslaught of the remaining Syyd Stalks, eventually reducing them down to just a half dozen in number and somehow beginning to repair our atmosphere in the process, the Syyd readied a counter of their own to the mysterious elemental being. It started when it was engaging the Stalk now forever frozen in the Siberian wasteland. As Grorn materialized there, the clouds parted, and more than a dozen of these bizarre, winged green creatures descended from the upper atmosphere, surrounding the being and wasting no time in swarming it. Grorn countered with laser barrages, but they expected this. A few were reduced to atoms, but ultimately they began returning fire with the exact same, albeit weaker bursts of energy. Drone footage of the attack showed, when viewed on different wavelengths, that they were absorbing and redirecting this energy attack among themselves, and using it to continuously blindside our protector. It was a surprisingly brilliant strategy, and betrayed a level of stragetic genetic modification we had yet to see. They made something from scratch that was incredibly effective against their new threat in just hours' time. And Grorn was beginning to show signs of deterioration, pieces of it's grassy mass sloughing off into the wasteland below, where Stamions were circling, waiting to finish it off. Grorn, however, had a different idea, and one hell of a hail mary.
With one last push, the elemental rocketed itself skyward, and released a beam of pure energy straight down. The Mana Pulse, its deadliest attack that had turned Dubai into a crater of Glass and left Rio de Janeiro an overgrown, verdant hell full of giant arthropods. It was quite the light show, and it toppled the Stalk and most of the host with it. Those that remained, well... when the smoke cleared they were met with an angry, confused Czolgosz , who seemed to materialize out of nothing and made short work of the rest.
Grorn, however, was beginning to crumble, its energy spent. As it slowly descended to the earth below, the small band of heroes and bystanders watching it happen, myself, Doctor Gaither and the soldiers of UNDER's command among them, a new figure appeared in our midst. A man, old and wrinkled, with skin like shattered glass and glowing blue eyes. He spoke and no one understood his words, but in our minds we intimately knew. This 'man' called itself the Voice of Grorn, and it's 'Master' was nearly out of energy. After this battle it would have to return to the earth and slumber for a great, untold period of time, likely years if not centuries, in order to recover its strength. But it offered us, those in power and clear of conscience, a choice. It had removed most of the kaiju and Syyd from the planet, and was willing to leave things as they now were, unable to finish the rest. We could solve the problem ourselves, by our own means, with no dangers again. Or, if we fearred we could not do this, and that the remaining Syyd were too great, it could use the last of its power to restore the kaiju to the world, undoing its previous action. We were warned, however, that the kaiju were the far greater danger, and that millions of years ago they did much more damage than the Syyd ever could, forcing it's hand in a great extermination and nearly spending itself in the proces. But, they had somehow become a part of the ecosystem so much that, in a way, the status quo changed beyond repair and thus became the new system to defend. We would be left underneath their power and strength, but we could possibly live to fight another day. It was a gamble, one we challenged from many different angles, but Grorn seemed intent on it being all or nothing. I still have no idea why.
But we made our choice.

Two down, two to go! Enjoy this little oddball that was really fun to design and await the next two this evening! That's right, we're gonna wrap this up today!

I definitely didn’t see Grorn giving humanity that choice coming. Where did it keep the kaiju when it made them vanish?

Interesting plant kaiju! Definitely a bit oddball, but I love a few oddballs here and there.
