Description
It was 7:30 in the morning. Ethan and his four friends were huddled in their usual places near his and Lucas’s lockers.“So who you goin’ out with this week?” Jonathan asked Tobias teasingly. Tobias was well known for only keeping a girlfriend for a week or so before moving on to another.
“Colleen Summers.” Tobias replied with a grin.
“No way! I thought she said she didn’t want to date you!” Keith said, stunned.
Tobias shrugged. “Guess she changed her mind.”
Jonathan looked at Ethan. “You datin’ anyone new this week?”
Ethan shook his head. “Nah, man.”
All the while Lucas had been scanning the halls, thinking of a way to make a few extra bucks to pay off his bike repairs when he suddenly spotted a girl of 17 with long red hair at her locker. He had noticed that every now and again she would look at the group, then look away. This brought an idea to his ever-devious mind. “Hey, Ethan.”
Ethan looked up at him. “Hm?”
“You wanna make a bet?”
“Bet? What kinda bet?”
“Another one?” Keith asked, rolling his eyes.
Lucas grinned and shrugged. “Yeah, so?”
Ethan ran his hand through his short black hair. “I dunno....”
“Why not? It’s worth 50 bucks.”
“50?” the others asked in disbelief.
Lucas nodded. “Yup!”
“Alright then, what is it?”
Lucas pointed to the girl he had seen earlier. “I bet 50 bucks you can’t date her a whole week!”
The others looked at the girl and groaned.
“Not her!” Jonathan said.
“Yeah, that’s the nerd!”
Ethan shook his head. “No way, dude. Not her, nu-uh.”
“Oh, then you’re already willing to pay?” Lucas asked with a triumphant grin.
“Give 50 bucks to you, no way!”
“Then just go ask her. I wanna see how long it lasts.”
Ethan heaved an exasperated sigh and rolled his eyes. “Fine.”
The group watched Ethan as he walked towards the girl.
Sammie was in the middle of pulling out her books when she heard a voice behind her.
“Yo.”
Sammie jumped violently, dropping several of her books. She gasped and covered her mouth with her hand, a fierce blush heating her cheeks, She turned around and nearly dropped the rest of her books as her grip went slack when she came face-to-face with the boy she had been crushing on since the previous year.
Ethan looked down at the fallen books, then up at the flustered girl. “You dropped your books.”
Sammie’s blush deepened. She was too stunned to do anything, even when Ethan picked up her books and held them out to her.
“Here.”
Sammie snapped out of her daze, shaking her head to clear it. “T-thank you.” she said quietly as she tentatively took the books from him.
“Sure thing. Hey, you uh, wanna go out?”
This time all of Sammie’s books toppled to the floor. She quickly bent down to retrieve them.
Ethan looked over at his friends, who were watching intently. Lucas was snickering.
Sammie stood up, pushing a strand of her dark red hair behind her hair distractedly. She kept her gaze on the floor.
“So you gonna answer me or not?” Ethan asked.
“I-I-I don’t know…I mean…I’m not sure…I mean....” She sighed.
Ethan rolled his eyes and suppressed an exasperated sigh with great difficulty. “Make up your mind already! It’s about time to leave for class.”
“A-alright.” Sammie said in barely a whisper.
Ethan looked at her in surprise. “Really? Alright then. C’ya later.” He walked off to his group.
Sammie watched him for a moment, still finding it hard to believe what had just happened. Then the bell rang and she hurried off to class.
It was lunchtime and Sammie was sitting at a table alone, still feeling dazed by that morning’s events. A small smile was tugging at the corner of her mouth as she stared down at her tray. “I can’t believe it! Ethan asked me out. This is so exciting!”
Sammie was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t notice Ethan sit down at the table until he spoke.
“Yo.”
Sammie snapped out of her daze, shaking her head. She stared blankly at Ethan for a moment, then came back to her senses. She blushed darkly. “I-I’m sorry! I was just um…sorry.”
Ethan shook his head, amused. “Yer a strange gal.”
Sammie looked down at her hands sadly.
“So…where do you live?”
“Huh? Live? Well…285 east Cherrywood Street.”
Ethan smiled. “Cool. I’ll come by and get ya later.”
Sammie blinked in surprise. “G-get me? Where are we going?”
Ethan stood up and started walking off. “You’ll see....”
Sammie suddenly felt flustered, fiddling with her fingers, her food forgotten. “He wants to take me somewhere…?”
