Joker may have been in published comics for 45 years when James O'Barr's "The Crow" came on the scene.  However, the Crow, specifically the Eric Draven incarnation, has a steadier (cult) following because of his depression, thirst for vengeance on those who wronged him, and poetic musings on what life (and death) is in the larger scheme of things.  This offers a great character for people with chronic depression, myself included, to give insight to others so they offer real relief, not pity, when they encounter them.
