Description Model: Martin Challinor
Model Photographer: Gilles Crofta
Background inspired by

The iconic Elf from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of The Rings

Legolas is a prince of the Wood Elves, but he is of a different race of Elves, the Sindar or "Grey Elves". With his father, he settled among the Wood Elves to return to a simpler lifestyle. In this scene he is in his home, the Woodland Realm of Mirkwood, practicing with the bow. In moments, his father Thranduil will summon him to court and tell him that the creature Gollum has escaped, and that he is to meet with Elrond of Rivendell to discuss the matter. This will set his feet upon the path of joining the Fellowship of the Ring.

Legolas wears shoes rather than boots, and his step is so light that he can walk on snow and leaves without disturbing them.

I'm sorry to be a downer - normally your work is quite excellent - but it seems his upper body is massively disproportionate compared to his lower body. I have a feeling you meant to illustrate forced perspective, like shot from a dynamic angle, with his arms/upper body closer to the camera than his lower body, explaining why he's bigger up top than below, but it doesn't appear to have worked out. His legs appear too "straight on from the side" to encourage the viewer to believe it was shot at an angle (I'm terrible at dynamic angles, so I can sympathize with the difficulty). So as it is, it appears he has almost gnome-like proportions, with huge gorilla-like arms and large head =/

The other problem is the way you have him drawing his bow. You have him drawing the string along the outside of his arm, rather than the inside - this would never work properly, as it would be much more likely to strike his arm when released and release the arrow haphazardly, as you aren't drawing it back straight. [link] Also, while some people DO draw the bowstring back like you have his right hand shown (using thumb and forefinger), this is generally only done when using a mechanical release mechanism, or by untrained people who don't know better. Normally, bows are drawn with the index and middle finger, sometimes ring finger included, as illustrated in the photo.

Again, I don't mean this to be nasty or personal, just seemed to be more "mistakes" than I've seen in your work *nods*

No downer at all - I agree with the bow - I fixed the string (it was the last detail, and I did it at 3 a.m., which was too late to push to finish). As far as the perspective, that is the actual model's physical proportions - they seem exaggerated because darker areas always contract and light areas always expand, and if there isn't enough contrast in the background, or the background doesn't act to define borders, this can be even more so. That said, I think it worked nicely.

I don't take critique personally, particularly if it's from an artist I respect.

"I agree with the bow - I fixed the string (it was the last detail, and I did it at 3 a.m."

Heh, it happens. At least it was an easy fix

"As far as the perspective, that is the actual model's physical proportions"

I figured as much, that you were working from a model and were accurate as far as references go. Heh, I actually feel like I'm talking to myself - usually I'll work from photo references for my own work, but people will say "her legs look way too long" and I'll respond, "Maybe, but... that's exactly the way they are in the photo, so it can't be WRONG..." The critic's response is then always, "Well, it may be accurate, but it still doesn't necessarily look good that way." I do personally think it still looks odd, but, well, so long as you (or whoever you may have been painting it for) are happy, that's what's important *nods*

"I don't take critique personally, particularly if it's from an artist I respect."

I always try to make sure to emphasize that it's not a personal attack or anything *nods*

No offense, just critique: it looks to me as though the proportions are off (the legs look too short in comparison to the rest of the body and arms).

This looks more like my picture of him than in the movies. He looks more like he has lived and experienced.

Just what I thought! His face shows signs of life and experience, which I thought he lacked in life. After all Legolas was a veteran warrior not a sophomore
