Description Just finished this yesterday. I designed and put it together using my paper cutting machine to cut out the pieces. Now I just need to mail it to .

This was a nice break from sewing, but I probably won't be doing shadowboxes too often in the future.

Also, everything I know about shadowboxes I learned from . Go take their kit classes, they're great!

Edit: Forgot to mention! The pose is based on this vector by .

super cute! What kind of machine do you have? I just got one to do stencils for glass etching and I've been wanting to try doing a shadowbox forever!

I have aΒ Klic n Kut 12 inch Zing. I've had some problems with the machine, but overall it makes lovely shadowboxes.

Oh wow this looks fantastic!Β

I've thought about doing a shadow box before, but didn't know where to start. I'll totally look into those classes/kits you mentioned ^-^

It's not that bad. I'd definitely recommend taking The-Paper-Pony 's kit classes, since they do all the hard design work and you just need to sit down and build it over an evening.

adamlhumphreys In reply to valleyviolet [2014-01-25 04:02:51 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, but see, I would want to make an original design. I haven't even designed a simplistic, stylized, 3D Rarity neon sign yet.

valleyviolet In reply to adamlhumphreys [2014-01-29 19:04:00 +0000 UTC]

I mostly recommend the classes because they teach you lots of techniques for construction and layering (which helps make designing the pieces easier). It meant I got to skip lots of figuring things out for myself.

They lower end ones are about $120-200.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

valleyviolet In reply to adamlhumphreys [2014-01-22 18:14:07 +0000 UTC]

They stuff sells is considerably cheaper than that. They sell their smaller/simpler boxes closer to $40 to $50 and the kits for their classes run around $20 to $25.Β

valleyviolet In reply to adamlhumphreys [2014-01-22 20:08:43 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes those are pricy. Mine was $400... so like a midrange sewing machine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

PheiPlushies In reply to valleyviolet [2014-02-12 16:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Oooh. I always thought they cut them out by hand.

That's super interesting! So you just feed it with vector data and it plots it out? What machine are you using?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valleyviolet In reply to PheiPlushies [2014-02-12 17:33:49 +0000 UTC]

You could cut them out by hand, but it's a lot of work!

I have a Klic-n-Kut Zing, which comes with a copy of the software Make the Cut. I can load whatever svg of vectors I want into Make the Cut and then it sends them to my machine. I've had some problems calibrating the machine, but I'm super happy with the resulting cuts. I've got a 12" machine but it looks like they've just started selling 14" machines for the price I paid for mine: knkusa.com/

PheiPlushies In reply to valleyviolet [2014-02-12 17:41:06 +0000 UTC]

Oooh that's so nice. I'm tempted to buy it just for cutting out my plushie templates.

It'd be so great to have a laser plotter for minky, though.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valleyviolet In reply to PheiPlushies [2014-02-12 17:42:33 +0000 UTC]

I've never tried using it with fabric, but I bought the machine originally to cut out my paper pattern pieces, and it works great for that!

adamlhumphreys In reply to valleyviolet [2014-01-22 20:14:04 +0000 UTC]

I dunno. Β I could probably get a couple of heavy duty old-school sewing machines for that.

Nobody values the old metal workhorses like they should. Β

If you were trying to buy a working treadle machine it'd run you $200 - $400 (the broken ones are a lot cheaper). I still have several I need to find better homes for. *sigh*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

adamlhumphreys In reply to valleyviolet [2014-01-22 21:05:17 +0000 UTC]

Exactly!

My mom actually saw one of those at a Helping Hands for $100. Not sure if it was working or not, but I know what you mean. Β I just like electricity, but only if it's just going through a switch and a motor for simple sewing. Plus I didn't have a place for it at the time.

You have several treadle machine?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valleyviolet In reply to adamlhumphreys [2014-01-23 16:14:59 +0000 UTC]

LOL, yes. For a while I was collecting them and repairing them. I got my first treaded like 6 or 7 years ago and used it to sew my wedding dress. I have four at the moment and they're mostly clogging up my living room because I haven't gotten around to finding some of them new homes.

adamlhumphreys In reply to valleyviolet [2014-01-23 17:47:44 +0000 UTC]

Cool! Well, in some ways. ^^ I do hope you're able to find good homes for them. If we had room for one, I'd certainly consider, though I imagine the shipping would be... fairly high.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valleyviolet In reply to adamlhumphreys [2014-01-23 18:10:23 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I would love to give you one, but the shipping would be more than the machine is worth. Usually when people sell them cross country they look for people in the treadle community who are driving that way and ask them to "pony express" the machines as part of their trip.

adamlhumphreys In reply to valleyviolet [2014-01-24 03:13:53 +0000 UTC]

Makes sense toΒ me. They do dissemble to a degree though, right?

Oh, I also finally started my princess pattern! Now I just need to pattern a head and test.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valleyviolet In reply to adamlhumphreys [2014-01-24 21:34:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, they disassemble in the sense that you could theoretically unbolt the treadle mechanism from the table top but doing that wouldn't make them any smaller! They're really one piece for traveling.

Can't wait to see your princess!

adamlhumphreys In reply to valleyviolet [2014-01-25 04:01:01 +0000 UTC]
