Description
Here's a comparison between the new male pony head and the existing female head. I'm not sure how easy it is to tell, but he's quite a bit taller, even without his hair!Related content

I'm asking my parents if I could get your physical copy of the Pony Pattern and the Filly Pattern for Christmas.
The thing is I don't have a sewing machine. How long do you think it will take to sow it by hand?
Oh, and would you recommend using fleece for sowing?

I usually recommend that if you've never sewn with fleece before you start with something that's not stretchy (like flannel or quilting cotton). If you've worked with fleece and you're comfortable with it, then go ahead and start with that.
As far as how fast it takes, that depends a lot on how fast you are at hand sewing. It takes me between 6 and 20 hours to finish a plushy using the machine, so try to be patient with yourself. If you haven't made plushies before, you might want to look at some of the tips linked off of this post: [link]
Don't hesitate to drop me a note if you have questions. I'm always happy to help.

Lovely and creative! Love the patterns on Applebloom's mane and body.
Every time I read the title I read it in Big Mac's voice.

Thanks. I'm hoping to make a version with a larger draft horse body in July (once the filly/colt pattern is finished).

Yup! I'm working on a filly pattern right now and as soon as that's finished I'm going back to finishing the male pattern. Depending on how the prototype for the draft horse body turns out I'm hoping to get it out in late July or August.

I'm hoping I'll be able to get it out in the next month or two. I've had a bit of a burn out, so things got considerably slowed down.
On the up side, a female Dr Whooves would be adorable too.

Same body design, different head pattern? And what type of cloth are they made of?

valleyviolet In reply to lunescence [2012-04-09 21:30:14 +0000 UTC]
Yes, they both have the same body design, and different head patterns. They're made almost entirely out of cotton flannel (although some of it is different weights). The pony on the right has hair made from a lighter weight cotton quilting fabric because I couldn't find a flannel in the right color.

I do love the designs. I am actually off to buy your pattern atm (so much easier than guess-and-checking a dozen times to get a good look). I like the flannel idea over fleece, sturdier and less pill but I'll take suggestions! I am having trouble finding someone to embroidery applique eyes to give a better look than paint or felt (I see often).
Suggestions anyone?

Thank you!
I really need to write a journal post on doing eyes and cutie marks (I have a bunch of info collected and I keep forgetting to post it!). Anyhow, I'd suggest for your embroidery needs. You can ship him fabric and he'll do custom embroidery on it for you or he also sells embroidered patches that you can sew on.

D'aaaw they are so cute! I really like seeing ponies made in quilting cotton like this. Minky is great and I love using it for mine, but it's nice to see different things too!

While the head is certainly coming along, I do think that the snout is too...I guess long? He's kinda got a Jay Leno chin with how it dips down like that.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
valleyviolet In reply to MintyStitch [2012-03-23 23:15:13 +0000 UTC]
LOL! This is partly the angle you're seeing it at (he has a very round head, which is the round bit before the dip) and partly the angle I attached his head at (he's looking a little more down instead of straight forward). I promise from the side the bottom line of his chin is straight.

Maybe it's the angle here, but the head for the male still looks too big for the body. The male ponies have such bigger bodies, I'd suggest actually bulking up the body some more.

valleyviolet In reply to StudioNeko [2012-03-23 23:13:19 +0000 UTC]
Part of what you're seeing is the angle (the picture is from above, rather than pony eye-level) and part of what you're seeing is the fact that the ponies heads are always way bigger than they seem. If you look at vectors of the background ponies like Dr Hooves or Carmel standing from the side, their heads are like 3/4 the length of their bodies (totally ridiculous by real world standards!). The girl ponies have similar proportions, but are a little smaller overall with slightly shorter necks and legs.
I think this body is going to work best for the slimmer male ponies rather than the draft horse ones. I just made this guy because I had red flannel and he's one of my favoritest.

StudioNeko In reply to valleyviolet [2012-03-24 00:26:05 +0000 UTC]
Good point! So it's the angle then! So for the draft-style ponies, I'll know to alter the body pattern slightly larger. Thanks! Looking forward to this addition!

Not ALL of them do though...Only some like Big mac and Fancy Pants do, the rest really just have a different head and no furry hooves.
