Description

Dawn cracked steadily as Illoreth padded through her part of the woods. Songbirds chirped happily above the Felvarg as she walked. The pinks of the morning covered the trees and leaves. The quiet, cool mornings were something she very much enjoyed, being alone all her life let her appreciate the stillness. Her brisk walk was interrupted by an unfamiliar sound: sad howling of a pup. Why a pup? Illoreth immediately halted, perking her ears and senses to locate the small creature. She padded forward through the trees in the direction of the pup’s sad song. The loud noise seemed to be coming from beyond a few thick bushes.  She poked her nose through the vegetation, finally seeing the pup alone in a clearing. What was he doing here? Seeing the child alone reminded her of her younger self, and filled her with a common determination to help the small boy.

“Are you lost?” The female chimed in, emerging from her hiding spot and making her way slowly to the young male. The other Felvarg spun around, ending his loud barking. The grey pup scrambled quickly to his feet, bowing his head clumsily to the ground. He was visibly shaking, proving he had been here a while.

“I-I’m sorry! I didn’t know I was in someone’s territory; p-please don’t eat me!!” Illoreth touched her nose to the smaller one, nudging him to stand.

“Eat you? Why would I do such a thing?” The boy lifted his nose from the dirt to look at Illoreth, small tears filling his eyes. She gave a warm and assuring smile which seemed to help the pup feel a little less distraught. “You’re safe with me, young one.” Illoreth sniffed the air in hopes to catch whiff of another female. “Where is your mother?” The pup sniffed, shaking his head to wipe the tears away

“I don’t know, I haven’t seen her in 2 sunrises-”

The pup looked around at all the massive trees, trying to find some sort of familiarity in the foliage. Iloreth sighed sadly, if it’s been that long then undoubtedly the mother had already returned to the pack. Illoreth knew she could do something, and decided to help. The larger Felvarg gave the other a few quick sniffs. He smelled heavily of rain and grassland. If Illoreth had to guess where the young one was from, she would place her bets on the small pack that resided in the nearby mountains. The boy spoke up; confirming her suspicions, “I came out here with my mother on a long hunting trip, our pack lives in the mountains somewhere around here” The mountain that the grey pup spoke about was about a day journey away. Illoreth looked into the dark blue sky, the last few stars twinkling in the growing light of day.

“Let’s get you home then; I’m sure your mother is worried sick!” Illoreth tore her gaze away from the sky and crouched down, allowing the small male to scramble his way onto her back. She hummed quietly; more for the boy than for herself. The pinks of the forest floor blended to their cool green colors when the sun rose to late morning. The rays of light eventually flooded through the trees and lit the dirt path to the nearby mountain range.
