Description
A SANTA COMPAÑA. The compaña is the gathering of souls from Purgatory for a specific purpose. At twelve o'clock at night the deceased rise, go in procession through the main door, a living person goes in front with the cross and the cauldron of holy water, and may not, under any pretext, turn his head. Each deceased person carries a light that cannot be seen, but the smell of burning wax is clearly perceived. The retinue is not seen either, but one can perceive the air produced by its passage. The unfortunate director can only dispense himself from such a gloomy task by finding another person and handing him the cross and the cauldron, before he makes a circle on the ground, thus being free to lead the procession.
