Description
Slowly making your way up a steep, grassy hill, a large basket propped against your hip, you saw what looked like someone standing in the distance. The person was so still, you thought for a moment that it might simply be a statue. “Is someone up here? That's weird. No one ever comes this way.” Squinting your eyes against the morning sun as you continued your ascent, you were finally able to make out more than just a silhouette. One look at the person's armor was all it took for you to know exactly who it was. “Oh hey, it's you. What are you doing way up here?”Though he had heard you approaching for quite some time now, it was only when you called out to him that the Warrior of Light turned his attention to you. His expression even more stoic than usual, he gave a short, to the point answer. “Thinking.”
“Seriously?” Legs aching from the climb, you dropped your basket to the ground and let out a sigh. “This is a pretty long walk just to think.”
“Yes.” Eyes already back on the horizon, he quietly agreed. “But well worth it.”
“If you say so. I'm always way too tired when I get here to think.” Lowering yourself to your knees, you began skillfully plucking flowers from one of the many patches that littered the hillside. “I should probably stop talking though, huh? It's not really all that easy to think when you have someone rambling at you.”
“I didn't mind.” His attention on you once more, the Warrior of Light looked down at you, his expression turning slightly curious. “What are you doing?”
“Gathering flowers.” Trying not to giggle at his question, as the answer should have been perfectly obvious, you kept filling your basket with the rather unattractive flowers. “My boss says the ones up here smell better because they're closer to the sun, but I think that's just an excuse so she can charge more for them.”
“Oh?” Now interested, at least somewhat, he knelt down beside you and plucked one of the buds. After inspecting it for a second or two, he brought the petals close and took in their scent. “They have no smell at all.” Assuming this was some kind of joke, his shoulders went lax as all curiosity vanished from his face.
“Not yet they don't.” Giggling softly, you took the flower from his hand and placed it in your palm. Using your thumb as a makeshift pestle, you began squishing and mashing at the petals until they released a slightly cloudy liquid. “You have to crush them up first. Like this.” Though the lightly sweet fragrance the petals had produced could already be smelled all around you, you lifted your hand to him, allowing him to truly take in the scent. “Smells pretty good, right? It's even better once it's made into a perfume”
Gently holding your hand in his, he lifted it to his nose, closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. “As many times as I've come here, I've never noticed.”
“That's probably because you're careful not to step on them, just like everyone else.” Wiping off your hand with a nod, you resumed your task. “If you had stepped on them, you'd have smelled it for sure.”
“I see.” A thoughtful tone lacing his voice, the Warrior of Light lifted a hand to his chin as if pondering something important. “So by breaking them down, you actually make them more beautiful, or more useful at the very least.”
“Huh?” Either he was reading way too much into how perfume was made, or he was talking about something that was beyond you. Something told you it was the latter. “Uh, yeah, something like that.” You nodded, still not even sure of he was talking to you, or himself. “I mean, like this, they're not even all that pretty. Not pretty enough to keep in a vase or in your garden anyway.”
His voice now little more than a whisper, he nodded as if understanding something important. “Their beauty lies on the inside then.”
“Yup. I guess that's one way to look at it.” Between the look on his face, and the tone of his voice, you were now thoroughly convinced that this had nothing at all to do with actual flowers. Not about to pry, however, as you doubted he would enlighten you as to what he was actually talking about, you simply changed the subject before the atmosphere had a chance to grow awkward. “So, have you remembered your name yet, Warrior of Light?”
Pushing his thoughts aside, at least for now, a tiny smile pulled at his lips. “No, but I haven't been searching for it.”
“Oh.” The idea still seemed as odd to you now as it had the first time the two of you had met, but you weren't going to bring that up. “Well I'm going to have to come up with a name for you then. Saying your whole title every time takes too long.” Your basket already close to being full, you pursed your lips slightly and tried to come up with something better to call him. “Maybe an acronym or something would work.”
His brows knitting together at your suggestion, the Warrior of Light said the prospective “name” out loud. “Wol?”
“Yeah no.” Quickly excusing your idea, you shook your head. “That sounds nothing like a name.”
Honestly not concerned about what you called him, the Warrior of Light pushed himself back onto his feet and brushed himself off. “I'm sure whatever you come up with will be fine.”
“You say that, but you don't know how bad I am at naming things.” You had only been searching for a name for a minute or two, but you could already tell that nothing you came up with would suit him. “On second thought, maybe it's better if I just keep calling you by your title. It's not like I see you that often anyway, so you might just end up forgetting whatever name I gave you.”
Unable to deny that what you were saying was true, he gave a slow nod. “I fear I would, eventually.”
“Then there's no use fussing over it, is there?” With your basket now as full as it could be without you spilling it on your way back to town, you too stood up and brushed the grass from your knees. “Well, I'd better get back before my boss starts getting suspicious and thinks I've run off somewhere.”
His eyes lowering to your basket, the Warrior of Light offered his assistance. “Do you need help carrying that?”
“Oh no, I've done this lots of times before. It's not heavy or anything like that, and going down the hill is a lot easier than climbing up it.” A bright smile lighting up your face, you picked up your basket and placed on your hip. “Besides, I might get in trouble if I let someone else do my work for me.”
“I see.” Though he wasn't quite convinced, he didn't argue with you. Bowing his head, just enough for it to be noticeable, he bid you farewell. “Then enjoy what's left of your day.”
“I'm sure I will.” Wishing you could have stayed a bit longer, you took a single step away before turning to face him again. “Have fun with your thinking, and stop by the shop sometime if you get a chance. I might be able to get you some free samples.” Your smile growing a bit mischievous, you gave him a playful wink. “You know the only thing ladies love more than a guy in armor is a guy that smells nice.”
Not quite sure if you were joking with him or not, the Warrior of Light nodded solemnly, but made no promises. “If I find the time.”
“Good. I look forward to it.” With a final wave, you began your lonely trek down the hillside. With each step you took, the idea of him so much as walking into the bright pink, glitter covered shop in which you worked became more and more outlandish. If ever there was a person that would have been completely out of place in there, it would have been him. Just picturing him standing there, among all the frilly fabrics, cosmetics, and gossiping women was almost enough to make you laugh. When you finally reached the store, you were certain you were right. “Nope. He's never going to step foot in there.”
