Description        “So this is really happening, isn't it?” Still trapped in the same cell you had been unwillingly sharing with Enki for the last couple of days, you looked down at the small pile of your belongings that Inori had managed to sneak to you. Due to his terrible laziness, it had taken him far longer to bring your items than it really should have, and if you weren't mistaken, there were still a few things missing. “I really am going to be stuck here for who knows how long.”

Looming over you, Enki's eyes slowly looked over your possessions. You weren't sure what he was searching for, if anything, but for some reason his actions made you feel a bit nervous. “Yes, I've already explained that to you.”

You had expected as much, as Enki didn't seem the type to suddenly change his mind about something. Even so, his words caused your heart to drop. It hadn't been necessarily unpleasant here, but it had most certainly been boring, and lonely. Your cellmate rarely spoke to you, and when he did, his answers were short and to the point. “I guess it was really stupid of me, but I kept hoping that you'd change your mind and let me go back to my cell.” Sighing quietly, you couldn't keep yourself from trying one last time to convince him to let you go. “I had even come up with a whole excuse as to where I've been all this time.”

Not at all interested in what your were saying, Enki barely acknowledged that he'd even heard you at all. “Hm.”

His lack of response hadn't been all that encouraging, but you weren't quite ready to give up yet. “I figured I could just tell the guards that I'd been hiding out in the vents, only sneaking out when I was hungry and such. The only problem I can really think of is explaining why all my stuff started disappearing.” Feigning thought, you tapped a crooked finger against your pursed lips. “I could probably blame that on the other inmates though.”

“If you're trying to change my mind now, you're wasting your breath.” His tone much sharper than it had been a moment ago, Enki glared down at you, as if daring you to say anything else. “And my patience.”

Just when you thought your heart couldn't sink any lower, it did. This time, his words were enough to make your whole body feel cold and numb. You weren't usually one to give up so easily, but after days of trying to negotiate with him, things really were starting to feel hopeless. “I see.”

“Then be quiet.” The way he had snapped out that sentence made it clear that whether you liked it or not, this conversation was over.

Nodding weakly, you did as told. This obedience only lasted for about a minute before it began to wane, however. As another nagging question popped into your mind, you cleared your throat and spoke again. “If you don't mind me asking, why exactly are you keeping me here?” Trying to keep your tone as agreeable as possible, you glanced up at him just long enough to see his stoic expression. Since you couldn't even begin to guess what he might be thinking, you continued and hoped for the best. “We both already know I'd make an awful spy, so I hope that's not your reason.”

With a shake of his head, Enki excused your suspicion. “It's not.”

For a few seconds, you waited for him to give you the real reason for keeping you. Almost instantly, however, you realized he had no intention of telling you anything. “Are you not going to tell me?” Brows furrowed together, you couldn't help but to fear the worst. “That's kind of worrying.”

Though he didn't really seem to care, Enki could see the concern on your face. He ignored this for a moment or two, but eventually he made a confession that took you completely by surprise. “I haven't decided yet.” I'll find a use for you soon enough.”

“Seriously?” It was hard to believe that he was keeping you here for no reason, but he didn't look like he was lying. Then again, as tall as he was, and as dark as this cell was, you really couldn't see his face all that well. Maybe this was just his idea of a joke.

Quickly catching on to your thoughts, Enki nodded, removing any doubt in your mind. “Yes, seriously.”

“That's not like you.” Having heard enough of the conversation to know what was going on, Inori entered the cell with another small box of your things. “You've usually got a plan for everything.” Half dropping the box on the ground, Inori looked up at Enki. “You're not starting to lose your edge are you?” Inori's question was answered with a glare that could have made even the most courageous of people turn tail and run. “Right, I'll go get another load of her stuff.” Not about to stick around, Inoi promptly turned around started down the darkened hallway.

You were glad Enki's anger wasn't focused on you, but you could still feel it just as strongly as if it had been. Hoping to lighten the mood, if that were possible, you offered a weak, slightly forced smile. “As many trips as he's made, I'm surprised he hasn't been caught yet.”

“Inori is so lazy and forgettable that no one even notices him, let alone suspects him of anything. He doesn't seem capable of doing anything other than sleeping.” You could have been hearing things, but Enki sounded almost proud of this fact. “That's why I use him.”

“Oh.” He was right. You would have never guessed that Inori was working for Enki. Saying he didn't seem capable was an understatement. “I guess you do plan for everything, don't you?” A hint of sarcasm creeping into your tone, the rest of your sentence came out as little more than a whisper. “Or, mostly everything anyway.”

Though you had spoken softly, Enki had heard you loud and clear. Already holding tightly to the front of your uniform, he lifted you several inches off of the ground. “What was that?”

“Nothing! Nothing at all. Even if it was something I'm dropping it.” Clutching both of your hands around his, you closed your eyes and swallowed hard. You were probably only six or seven inches off of the floor, but it was more than enough to shut you up. “I'd rather drop the subject than be dropped myself, so please just forget I said anything.”

“Good.” Pleased by your answer, he lowered you back to the ground. When he did this, you could have sworn you saw the slightest of smirks pulling at his lips.

“Y-yeah.” Brushing your uniform back into place, you hurried away from him and began looking for a place to set up your things. Unfortunately, the cell was already filled with random odds and ends, garbage and who knew what else. There really wasn't any room for anything else. Noticing your slight dilemma, Enki shoved a large pile of junk into the corner, making a little area for you and your things. It was small gesture, but it still brought a smile to your face. “Thanks.”

“Hmph.” Ignoring your gratitude, Enki took a seat, crossed his arms and watched you work.

Having his eyes on you and you alone was more than a little awkward, but it was something you were going to have to get used to. Other than the awkwardness, and the almost constant silence within the cell, it really wasn't so bad. You were sure eventually you'd get used to it, and Enki was already more willing to talk to you now than he had been. Maybe being here wouldn't be so horrible after all. “You know, you're really not as bad as everyone says you are. I guess I shouldn't just go around blindly believing rumors, huh?”

Taking what was supposed to be a bit of flattery as an insult, Enki's voice came out sounding like a low, angry growl. It was so low, it actually caused the ground beneath you to shake. “Excuse me?”

“Nothing, nevermind.” Shaking your head, a weak laugh escaped your throat. “I really need to learn to keep my mouth shut.” Already sure that would never happen, you sighed. “Still, what I said wasn't meant to be rude. It was supposed to be a compliment.” Absentmindedly placing your belongings around the area Enki had made for you, you thought aloud. “When I came down here, I was expecting you to be this massive glowering monster with glowing eyes and fangs.” Just remembering the fear you'd felt on that first day caused a shiver to run through you. “I thought for sure you were going to rip me to shreds just for the fun of it. You did scare me pretty badly at first, mostly because of the whole heights thing, but other than that, and keeping me here against my will, you haven't been mean or rude to me.” You shrugged. “Not really anyway.”

Having heard more than enough of your ramblings, Enki placed a large hand on the top of your head, turning you to face him with ease. His eyes narrowed slightly, but not in a way that would cause you fear or worry, he reminded you of the words you'd spoken only a moment or so earlier. “I thought you wanted to get control of your mouth.” Cocking a brow in a way that softened his features far more than he would have probably would have liked to know or admit, he scolded you. “You're doing a poor job.”

Blushing, both due to his scolding, and the look on his face, you nodded. “Oh yeah, I forgot about that already.” A strange, unfamiliar feeling filling your chest, a happy sigh left your lips. “Guess this is going to be tougher than I thought.”
