Ellis and Rochelle were giving each other double handed high fives, cheering, whilst coach sat upon the tanks corpse, looking rather pleased with himself. Nick smiled as he pulled himself off the shoulder of the road and onto the asphalt and walked over to them slightly hunched over, his hand on his lowed back.
“Good job.” He said, impressed, looking at each of them in turn.
“Good job? He never had a chance.” Coach stated, sticking his nose into the air and folding his arms, still sitting upon his throne.
“You’re right Coach, what could I have been thinking?” He said sarcastically. “But we can’t stay here. Every zombie within this area will have heard that ruckus.”

“Hey look! A motel! We can get showered! Crappy shampoo and tiny soap bars here I come!” Typical girl, Nick thought as Rochelle pointed frantically to the building ahead of them. It had been a couple of hours since the tank incident, and they had not run into trouble thus far, everything seemed pretty quiet, but they were all getting very tired, and Nick guessed that Rochelle was tired of feeling like a walking garbage back from the back room of a morgue. She was so light on her feet that he feared any second she would float away from them to some crazy magic shower land or something.
He looked at Ellis and rolled his eyes mockingly at Rochelle, who could not see the two because she was charging full speed ahead. Ellis smiled and nudged Nick hinting to him quietly to watch him. Nick nodded and watched as Ellis untied the arms of his jumpsuit and proceeded to tie them in a misshapen bow behind his back. Nick wasn’t quite sure what he was up to, but the sight still humoured him. Ellis put his finger up to his mouth, signalling Nick to keep quiet. Then. Without warning, he broke into a skip behind Rochelle, his arms daintily out to either side, shoulders raised, batting his eyelashes quickly. Every now and then he would do a little twirl to increase the feminine impression. Nick was amazed Rochelle had not noticed him, and Nick tried not to burst out laughing like some dumb idiot. Instead to mask it he coughed a couple times, his hand raised in front of his face.
Coach, on the other hand, was not so pleased. He had his face turned up into the most disgusting fashion you could possibly imagine. “Get yo’ ass back her boy, that ain’t at all manly.”
That was Coach. Being Coach. All “man” and no fun. Usually Nick himself was like that, but that was from all the hard years he had spent fending for his own well being to survive, but he felt more at ease now.
Although, that is beside the point. At Coach’s words Rochelle turned around to face them and Ellis, still skipping merrily, did not have time to stop, therefore he smashed right into her. Both of them fell to the ground. Ellis had her pinned beneath him, and although Nick could not see their faces, he was sure they both felt pretty awkward. Ellis lifted himself up onto his hands, since he had been practically lying on her before, and now they were pretty much nose to nose.
“uhhh, s-sorry.” He stammered, frozen for a moment, then quickly clamouring backwards away from her, sitting kind of disoriented on the pavement, looking around nervously.
Nick had already started walking briskly towards them, he did not need to be near them to know that it must have been really awkward. Coach more slowly, still shaking his head, approached Ellis. He lifted him off the ground, with one hand, by the shirt and put him on his feet, whilst giving him the classic “it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye” line. Nick proceeded to help Rochelle up, but in a more gentle fashion. “You okay?” He asked, as she groaned, getting to her feet.
“yeah, but I’ve been better.” She said rubbing the back of her head where it had struck the ground.
“You’ll be fine.” Coach grunted. Ellis standing behind him, still looking very embarrassed and did not utter another word. “Come on. Let’s find the woman a shower, maybe it’ll shut her up.” He continued, walking on ahead, shaking his head as he had done seconds before.
Rochelle put her hands on her hips and watched him leave with a look of discontent. Then she looked back at Nick, who shrugged his shoulders, trying not to smile. “Come on” He said, waving them on with his hand. “As sour as he is, we can’t leave him alone with the zombies.” Rochelle still looked unsatisfied but she went after the boys anyway.
As they neared the motel, its highlights and design became clearer. It was two storeys tall and fairly new, as hinted by the flawless paint job, and solid concrete stairs, but it was evident that the infected had done a number on it; some of the doors were off the hinges and had holes in several places. Windows were smashed, and the picket fence was leaning or broken in several places.
Coach had stopped in front of the entrance to wait for the others; even he knew he could not take on the horde alone. “We just gonna walk through the front door?” He asked as they caught up to him, giving the building a thorough look-over.
“Now way, there’s bound to be a build up of them in the lobby.” Nick said thinking through what he was about what he was about to suggest. “I say we break into one of the rooms and kill everything in sight, quickly and quietly. We’ll let Rochelle, and whoever else, get a shower, and then leave as we came. We can’t stay in one place for too long without being found out.” To this everyone nodded, except for Ellis who had his hand raised as if he were in school. “Uh…yes?” Nick asked hesitantly, afraid of the answer he would receive.
“We don’t have to take a shower together do we?” Cuz these motels are awfly small and I think it would be awkward to have men, squeezin’ up against other men and-“
“no, no, no Ellis. We’re taking them separately.” Nick cut in, putting one hand over his face.
“Oh okay, thas good, cuz there was this one time, me and keith was camping and his sleeping bag got all wet, he never mentioned why, I think he may have wet it when I was tellin’ him them ghost stories granpa used to tell us. Anyway, he asked to share mine, an I said sure, but then I found out that he sleeps in the nu-“
“Ellis, Ellis. We don’t have time for this right now.” Nick interrupted once more, still not recovered from the last statement Ellis had made. Rochelle walked over to him and smacked him up side the back of the head.
“T.M.I. E haul.” She spat.
Ellis just rubbed the back of his head, flashing her a submissive, puppy dog look. “Dang girl, I thought we was closer ‘n that.”
