Unlike most flame tests, in order to detect rhenium you have to heat it with a borax bead attached to a reducing flame. Rhenium will slowly turn the bead black (which gave the whole idea of creepiness and corruption).
The mask is a reference to how hard rhenium is to collect, since it's only ever found in trace quantities rather than in ore veins like most other metals.
