Description
Uploaded on request, this is the world map used for Third World , depicting Earth in 2275, inspired by the sci-fi series Starhunter.Pollution, overpopulation, plague, and war have ravaged the planet, causing the ice caps to melt, and the deserts to grow. Earth is now third world not only in it's position from the sun, but socially and economically as well.
Modified from a high-definition satellite image of the earth, this version is toned down from the original 10000X5000 pixel original I used in Third World .
Feel free to use this. All I ask is that you please let me know where it's being used. I'd love to see it used creatively.

Have any of the coastlines changed? Still more mindful of changes than the views of the Earth in the movie "Elysium," I'll grant you that (especially the expansion of the Sahara.)

I was in the beginning stages of teaching myself 3ds Max and Photoshop at the time, so I didn't get too ambitious with changing the coastlines.Β I mainly experimented by overlaying the map with a grungey texture and clone-stamping the deserts.

working on a film, may use this as a means of explaining the backstory. Is that cool? I understand if it isnt

I didn't! I swear! Don't shoot!
Actually, I just added the "Earth 2275" subtitle as an afterthought, mainly to connect it with the show Starhunter, whose first season takes place in 2275. I had wanted to make a piece called Third World for a long time; I think it's a very clever play on words, if I do say so myself.

Nah, I was just dicking with you there. The 3rd world time makes perfect sense here for 2275. Nothing spells out "the end" than a dystopia.

Wouldn't the amazon and more of the USA become desert too? Not sure Antarctica mainland would be the same shape as that? I like the idea behind it though.

That is true. I was on a limited time-frame to make it, so I wasn't really able to modify the entire coastline.
Glad you liked it just the same.

Fair enough. A lot of the detail comes from the bumpmapping as well as the cloud mapping (and it's bumpmap).

Nice, but if there was that much mely of the polar ice caps, there would be less land mass IMHO

I didn't want to make them completely gone, just somewhat melted (and very dirty). And by most realistic estimates, even if all the ice in the world were to melt, the water would rise only about 66 metres. So, while there would be less land mass, we wouldn't exactly be living in Waterworld or anything. (go here - [link] - to see an estimated "ice-free" world map). Also, keep in mind I had only about a week to prepare this (and the modeled scene in which it was used), so I didn't really have time to completely change the coastlines.

66 meters just doesnt seem enough does it, but they seem to have it well calculated, My idea in my head, imagined a hell of a lot less earth left.
But a good Image on your part though.

I know. I would have thought it'd be more extreme as well. But think of it this way: Some of the most populated areas in the world are included in those areas that would be flooded (i.e. anything less than 66m above sea level) so it's still be pretty catastrophic if that were to happen quickly.
Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you like it.
