Description Messing around with that whole falcon cloak/skin thing from Norse mythology, in which any time Loki wants to be a falcon, he has to borrow the form off'f Freya instead of getting his own, like EVERYBODY ELSE HAS TO. LOKI.

Anyway, the bird doodles are of peregrine falcons, because although it never gets more specific than 'falcon', they're fast, and I like them.
Also the little cheek markings they have look a little bit like helmet side pieces.

The cloak itself is completely inconsistent across all drawings, I seemed to keep changing my mind about how it would be separated and how do you even feathers anyway?

Alright, before I fangirl about the lovely Falcons (and the lovely Loki, lovely Eric and lovely Thor), I just have to say I was laughing my head off at the chibi!Loki declaring "I'm a Falcon!" - because I was listening to Tornado Rider's "I'm a Falcon" when I saw it. [link]
Seriously, it just goes so well with this picture. It could be Loki's Falcon Theme Tune!
And the rest is so lovely - I love Thor getting back at Loki for the "feathers" comment (I don't think he often get the opportunity to snark back. And Eric's gotten to the stage where he's all "meh" when Scandinavian Chaos Gods turn up covered in feathers.
Love this!

I finally remembered to listen to the song, and I am so glad I did. I agree, Loki is probably playing it in his head as he flies, and would air guitar if it were possible to do such a thing with wings

Thank you! I had to stick that bit in, what else was Thor's reaction going to be? Glad you liked it
And I am very sorry to reply so late D:

Thor has probably been waiting for ages to say that to Loki.

Obviously the answer is that Loki is an Animorph that has yet to acquire a falcon morph. *nods solemnly*

Also, I lovelovelove the feathers! And the mantle-like way you hung it from his shoulders in the top view of his back.

And Selwig in the bottom corner just looks like he's going "There's a bird at the window..."
Loki: "Hello! ^_^"
Selwig: "Oh, you." *sideways headtiltsitcomsmile*

He could hang out with Tobias and they could emo at each other!

Thanks They are a nightmare to draw, I am simplifying it in all later sketches.

And that is why Dr. S can never leave his window open.

Cool! What I keep on wondering though is why, being a shapeshifter, Loki doesn't just turn himself into a falcon and needs a cloak to do so in the myths. Maybe birds are kinda difficult?

VanHinck In reply to UniKelpieOwl [2012-09-01 12:02:30 +0000 UTC]

I was wondering that- there's no mention of Loki needing a cloak etc any other time he shifts into horses, flies, salmon, whatever- but there's 2 or 3 stories where Loki takes falcon shape, and in two he borrows Freya's cloak, and the third he borrows Frigga's cloak, so it's not a one off thing.
Cloak could mean just 'form' in general, and cloak a nice visual way of showing swapping forms- maybe Loki doesn't have a falcon form to hand or in his repertoire, and so needs to borrow one, so alternate forms could be limited or something.
Or maybe it simply is that birds are difficult! I've been banging my head against this one for a while...

UniKelpieOwl In reply to VanHinck [2012-09-01 12:13:35 +0000 UTC]

So I'm not the only one wondering! But I somehow like the idea that he has some trouble with birds for one reason or another. Who knows...But maybe he also just wanted to "borrow" something from Freyja and never give it back

Now why do I think that Hawkeye would have a thing or two to say to all this?
Ah, Norse mythology: a source of constant amusement. Do you do commissions? If you do let me know what you think about a project called Loki's 10 most awkward mythology moments ...
I like Dr. S.'s expression in the left picture. It looks like he thinks: "A falcon. *sigh* Why can't Loki be something more useful, like a carrier pigeon or something."

Hmm, I wonder what Loki's top 10 most awkward mythological moments would be?
The horse... and that thing with the goat... hmmm

fletcherc In reply to VanHinck [2012-09-05 10:36:44 +0000 UTC]

That one time he and Thor dressed up as girls and went to get Mjolnir back is one of my favourite Loki moments, I have to admit. Though it was probably more embarrassing for Thor ... oh, and then that story with Sif's hair. And that rather pointless adventure where he kidnapped Idunn and her golden apples. There's no god I find more entertaining (except for some of the more exotic Vodun ones).
Hm, maybe there are not enough awkward moments for a top 10 but surely for a top 5

I don't know if you have already, but take a look at images of falcons in flight. Or just birds with folded wings. I used to draw a lot of birds, like at [link] but unless there is a breeze blowing across their feathers in an awkward direction, they all seem to have feathers tightly pressed against their wings. Don't get me wrong, I like your sketches very much, but as someone who's lived in a house with giant, bird killing windows, (I knnow, I know... ) I've noticed that feathers have a smooth appearance even in death.

Also, it's kinda like drawing scales

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VanHinck In reply to plunderer01 [2012-09-01 12:50:02 +0000 UTC]

No worries, thank you
I was having trouble with the feathers at the cloak scale- like how big they'd be in that kind of form- and also showing that they were feathers, and that made them end up more like fur. I know what you mean about the smoothness of feathers on the actual bird, which may work better on the scaled up cloak form. Scales is probably a useful way to think of it, thanks!

plunderer01 In reply to VanHinck [2012-09-01 13:58:42 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.

Personally, I would scale up the feathers to match Loki's size. That would make the primaries like two feet long, but that would look cool as hell.

If you want to save yourself some tedious work, (this just came to me) you could try only drawing in the primaries or the most prominent feathers on the wings for the cloak and keeping the rest of the surface area smooth. I hope that makes sense.
