Description
Ok... (takes deep breath)I like to draw free hand.
technical scientific and structured stuff and i do Not get along well at ALL.
I hated doing this piece.
Hated it me Precious.
Give me organic flow ANY day. Not this ruler stuff.
Hadda do it tho. in fact it is actually the Only vanishing point perspective drawing i have ever done to this level of detail, and perhaps only onr of a half dozen i have ever done in my life.
I needed the practice.
I pushed my self through this. struggling with the technicals, struggling with the sense of light sources.
Getting the oval of light source in the center for me was a triumph.
Clearly I need to do more. But god o God its like pulling teeth. its a fight ever single step of the way.
Like walking into the principles office knowing your getting the strap.
The bosses office Knowing yer getting fired with out benefits and you have a baby on the way.
this was pure terror and horror for me to do.
I can go on and on.
(shudders)
ok then, well... critique me.

I still like this one, even if it's not one you like. I'm glad I have a print. 👍: 0 ⏩: 0

I think you nailed this piece except the alien's background, I would have enjoyed more of a finer, more specific lightsource direction... and something there in that doorway besides the alien's silhouette. If it is backlit, as the light suggests, more of its shadow should project onto the scene before it, and that light drama would play nicely to the femme figure crawling on the floor...
That's about the best critique I can manage; your perspective seems spot on and I enjoy the details like the electro-junk hanging from the ceiling and that swirly planet and the stars! Your composition works well, a good strong variation of shapes and lines makes the eye travel... all good, all work. It's just the payoff at the middle of the canvas leaves something to be desired... what's in that other room? I wonder. And you haven't answered a hint of it for me in the drawing
Keep it up!

Tho I meant for peeps to wonder whats in the next room, you are right about the alien should be casting more of a shadow if he is back lit.
I meant it to be a silhouette, but it doesnt really work.
I am frankly Untrained.
An amature trying to be proffessional. and I dont know how to correct the problem.

The way to correct the problems you encounter in your work is to do what you've been doing, keep working. Your scaly textures improved on your second shot at the same thing... it follows reason that your next dramatic light scenario in inks will also improve.
That's okay. I think you've chosen one of the hardest mediums to master. Paint is so much nicer to me... if I make a mistake, I just paint over it until it's right!

yeah, the magic of layering in photo shop. make one booboo, and you go back to the last layer.
where as in traditional, make a good boo boo and you start from scratch.
Im partially colorblind mind you.
reds and browns look kinda the same, for example.
I can still Do color, but its a little tricky so ive avoided it most of my life.
Hmm, do you have any other ID pics.
I tend to like to see whom i am conversating with. lol.

haha, well, even in oil paints I find it easier to correct mistakes than pen and ink But yeah, any major mistake and it's usually a re-prime and startover.
Pens and inks work well for you then, if you're colorblind, it won't matter Interesting though, to finally meet a colorblind artist! I always wondered what would happen if I were colorblind... how my colors would look
I have a few ID photos yeah. [link] [link] [link] I hope you understand I don't put many photos of myself online.

I like this piece. My only critique is that the alien in silhouette looks two dimensional. Good work.

to true.
flat and zero depth or presence.
what would YOU have done to change that?

erdna1 In reply to VARAKIENEN [2010-03-08 09:30:29 +0000 UTC]
I would have drawn the alien mostly in shadow, but not a completely silhouette. That would be enough to reveal some detail and depth on the character.

if i did that, i wouldnt have the light source, the oval extending out ward. it changes the entire picture.

I would mantain it and just do what I explained, even if it wouldn't be the correct light and shadow relation. But you're the artist there, so it's your call. I'm only suggesting...

I was trying to refer to the strait lines on the floor. But yeah, they look like they took hours.

VARAKIENEN In reply to fiendcracker [2010-03-08 00:26:12 +0000 UTC]
well that and the cieling ones combined, yes, a couple hours.
they didnt taper like I wanted either.
not sure how other artists do it. what tools they use for perfect thick to thin line tapering.
is that a photo shop thing?
