Can Mai cheer Terry on in Smash now...?Since Mai Shiranui was not included as a possible background character in Terry Bogard's KOF Arena stage for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (apparently including her would have broken the game out of its intended E10 rating
), I took it as a personal character design challenge to make her more suitable for the game. Blue Mary was among the included characters, so I used that as a basis for what would be allowable.I say "challenge", but it really wasn't, when you check the references. Mai may have her iconic kunoichi outfit, but she DID have a more conservative outfit in her appearance in Fatal Fury 3 and Real Bout games, so I took that, and adapted it with my own touches for a slightly more updated take.

With Yuri... the two wear kimonos while Mai holds an umbrella and having her hold a baby puppet...Yuri holds up a Kyokugen Dojo sign
With King/Mary...leather jacket...also have King’s little brother, Jan and Mary’s dog, Anton with them as Jan and Anton are integral in the KOF Womens Team mythos

Apparently due to their popularity in Japan... but the biggest KOF fanbase is in latin america and the most well known faces here (Mai and Rugal) were out, heck, even Yamazaki made it, what a freaking shame

Well, if I were to try to analyze it, it may be that Mai, at least compared to the sexier styled characters of Dragon Quest, is a bit more blatant in her display of sexuality (what with the sheer amount of skin her iconic outfit already has, her bounciness, not to mention her default standing pose animation).
While DQ does have representation in Smash, the Hero character(s) are the only ones that actually appear in the game, barring a few monsters in the Yggdrasil stage, and none of the other party members for any iteration of the game. Compared to Terry, who brings along several KOF characters in his stage, including Blue Mary, who shows the most skin of the included girls, and Yuri, who is a bit more buxom than she is usually portrayed. I'm not sure, but if we also factor in the skin exposed by the other male characters, they really toed the line in the amount of fanservice allowable in Smash content.
Perhaps we should also consider the already existing fanservicey content, such as Zero-Suit Samus and Bayonetta, into the calculations?
