An interesting question in the description but I feel upon further Analysis this question seems to vague or just asked that way.
In terms of wasting time what else should people be doing? Reading books Watching television films or interacting with people? The 1st 3 are obviously doing the same thing except with the Internet it's all connected with the world and a vast amount of information that it would take more than a lifetime to sift through any of it and it's constantly growing at a more increasing rate. So I say the Internet is the better waste of time as you can do so much with it.
And as for the interacting with people that's done online better than anywhere else as you can interact with anyone around the world and a large amount of people all at once. Obviously one-on-one are better but this can also be done online but that's not to say it shouldn't be done in person but that's what Skype and Google hang out is for, but only if there's no one to talk to in real life.
And for most of us especially peer introverts like me with no relationships and who rarely leaves the house is the only real place I do this and is a way for me to keep in contact with friends and make new ones based on common interests.
Of course there are good things to do with your free time such as physical activity or actual interaction with people, for instance I like to take night walks and I started doing exercises, but if you've done both like if you have a job then I say wasting time screwing around online where you can still contact people and learn things was a pretty good step for humanity to take and just another step in our evolution.
I also forgot to mention learning things but you don't have to do that all the time and come on, she's in a freaking spaceship cockpit, what else is she supposed to do!
Also what's up with her lower legs? She's kind of got Frankenstein's monster skin patterns going on, is she supposed to be wearing skin colored socks orβ¦ Was there like an accidentβ¦

I have created a backstory to try to fit the artwork above.
"88", real name Diana Miller, is the 88th Caretaker of the sleeper ship Salvation that has been traveling from the ruined planet Earth to an Earthlike world that is over 100 light years away from the Solar System. The Salvation can only go as fast as one-tenth the speed of light, so the ship was intended to take a total of 1,000 years to reach its destination.
Though she appears to be a teenage girl, 88 is actually over 1,000 years old, having spent most of her existence in suspended animation along with thousands of other teenagers dispatched from Earth as its biosphere was slowly collapsing. She was awakened from her sleep by the 87th Caretaker, who intended Diana to take his place while he returned to sleep. To prepare her for her lonely task of overseeing the Salvation's operations, 87 had Diana undergo severe mental conditioning which suppressed both her normal human emotions and her sex drive, making her rather like a Vulcan of Star Trek. Well, not quite; sometimes her original personality does surface anyway and makes her feel very depressed.
Despite her lack of emotion, 88 still needs to be entertained, and she mostly gets it in the form of video games. The Salvation's computer has hundreds of video games programmed into it, but 88 also has access to game consoles that were taken from Earth and were originally owned by an earlier Caretaker who collected them; now they are hers.
About two years after 88 began her duties, the ship arrived at the targeted planet and she found the world to be suitable for colonization, so after the analysis of the world is complete she willΒ begin reviving the other people on the ship, including the other Caretakers who served before her. Once they are all revived, 88 hopes to have her conditioning reversed so she can live like a normal teenager again (something denied to all the other Caretakers, who served until they were middle aged). She knows that she will likely be expected to have children quickly to help populate the world too.

This brought to mind another interesting question.Β So we have at least one generation that grew up completely with video game controllers such as the Xbox and PSx consoles (even the WII is similarly constructed), why to craft like fighter places and such still use the old style stick/yoke and pedals?Β Why not capitalize on an interface potential recruits are familiar with as opposed to one that was a product of necessity during the manual linkage/cable days (especially since most fighter craft are fly by wire anyway with only a couple of exceptions like the A-10, and in the case of the A-10 the cable system is only back up for the hydraulics).

Largely because the pilot has feet and so you might as well use them for something. Besides, the HOTAS cockpit layout already uses the pilot's other hand to control the throttle, and has a hat switch and a D-pad mounted on the main stick. Also, the tiny range of movement of the sticks on a console joypad gives you less fine control and limits the number of simultaneous inputs, it's like mouse & keyboard vs joypad in that regard. And you absolutely do not want an aircraft throttle control to spring back to the zero position like a joystick does.
I mean come on, first military use of an analog joystick was in the mid 40s to control Fritz-X glide bombs ( www.deutscheluftwaffe.de/wp-co⦠) and they were used to control the first generation of MCLOS anti-tank missiles ( www.armyrecognition.com/images⦠: for scale, that missile is just shy of three feet long). You think this isn't something that's been tried and discarded as inferior to the existing method?
Tanks, on the other hand, do use gun controllers laid out very similarly to joypads, and those have been around since before the two-handle joypad layout got popular. Example, this is the gunner's controller from a Challenger 2: forum.facepunch.com/general/bfβ¦

Point made.Β I'm always commenting on how it's funny how some modern "conveniences" people take for granted (like smart watches and radio controls on the steering wheel of my car) would have totally enamored 10 year old me, but 40 something me thinks they kind of suck in practice (well, smart watches probably less so...but I'm not a fan of buttons on the steering wheel or the multi function knobs cars have now).Β So I see what you're saying, while it may be a familiar interface it doesn't scale well.Β Sort of the reverse about how I feel about many driving games.Β I can drive a car really well because there is more feedback than just the steering wheel, I have a hell of a time with driving games because I can't feel the car around me and judge the reaction.
Ugh....You don't want those joysticks that don't snap back.Β There were a few I saw in the early 80's that didn't (I saw them on Tandy CoCos mostly).Β They were useful as balance/fade controls in Quadrophonic stereos though.Β I thought the idea of driving the focal point around the room was kinda cool.

I really like this. Like most great art, it's compelling and captures the imagination. It makes you want to ask questions like... who is this girl? What planet is she orbiting? Why is she dressed like that in the cockpit of a space craft? It almost tells a short story of a girl whose parent(s) are having her take the next watch while they catch a few hours of sleep. So she decides to get comfortable and chill with some vintage video games to pass the time.
Aside from the zero grav behavior of the girl's shirt and dog tags (even though she isn't strapped in) whomever added the motion should depict the field of stars outside moving very slowly. Even in perfect geostationary orbit, stars will appear to be moving because the planet is the point of reference.Β

And of course the girl is chill and cute -- that's not all there is to life, but it adds to the aesthetic. To continue the conversation of your question there.. yes the internet can have addictive elements, but also it has elements that can enhance your life. I trust that, like you, many realize this and are slowly taking steps to disconnect when healthier opportunities present themselves.

For the love of everything, please, set this in to motion. I'm just picturing these quiet peaceful scenes of daily life. Tending what needs tending, reading, conversing with people back home with her gadgets. Maybe some flashes of what lead up to her to signing up to single handedly tend a space ship in the cold vastness of space as opposed to live back on Earth with friends and family. I am dying to experience this.

She always seems to have this, often not so subtle, nihilistic sadness in her eyes that I empathize with and find beautiful in some unconventional way.Β I can't discern anything about her or her story except that she seems to always be alone in the world in which she exists (which I empathize with as well...maybe that's why I absolutely fell in love with this character (so much so that I joined DeviantArt just to comment).
