I think it responds to the deeper wishes in their hearts celestia was forced to fight luna so she was scared and panicked and probally though her sistwr was very possibly beyind saving but when the mane six did it their heads and hearts were clearer cause they werent alone like celestia was and all they could think about was the good side of things such as finding the elements and becoming friends and whatnot to the point they just werent afraid of nightmare anymore so the elelements responded and simply made nightmare not scary anymore because thats more or less what they wanted
