somehow this made me think of an old video-game, "elder scrolls 3, morrowind": part of your main quest is to prove that you are the "nerevarine", the re-incarnation of general Nerevar. (or was it neravar? it's been a long time) it's possible to pick a male or female character, which DOES make a difference in a few side-quests...

why you sad man? on the manga, as it turns out the daughter actually didn't die and it was only in the dream world. eventually the main character has to find the happy light orb things to go back in time and prevent the wife from dying. they both are alive and happily ever after.
