According with the theory of changelings as hybrids of insect and pony with a hive society, the workers and soldiers of a hive are female, but sterile. The drones are male but usually their only function is to impregnate the queen.

Actually when you think about it, wouldn't it be both?
If these things feed off of any sort of love, then they wouldn't have to have a gender to feed, as they can seemingly bend their own shape like a siren would to a pony's preference, for example, Cadence. Now if we take it into perspective of any regular changeling, they could just switch pony forms as they go, right? Just like with Pinkie Pie when she asked the one to imitate her after a series of switching for intimidation.
But if they were aiming to woo only the female of the ponies, Queen Chrysalis wouldn't have needed the stallions of the pony species, as they would have no vital role in the changeling's economy, and therefore may have driven them away. But as that is not the case, and we see that they too attempt at capturing the hearts of the mares, we could only conclude that these insects are perhaps both genders of the species-
