He came to me through the satin darkness, his fragile, mortal life hanging on the dim glow of a red warning light. In the infinite cold, he carried with him the slightest hint of warmth, and it called to me as much as the pale velvet of his skin and the sheathed iron of his all-too-real arms. A living man... a brief flash of an existence in the endless length of my eternity, but one that sparked so brightly, so vitally that I thought it the most beautiful treasure in all the cosmos. How long had I watched them from afar, standing alone among the heavens, the untouchable Virgin, the Lady who had forsaken Love for Purity? How long had I wished for some tiny hint of that fire to come warm the ice of space?

Thus, I stole one moment to slip free from the stars that bound me and feel once more, to trace the lines written by human bones and imagine the whisper touch of the breath that made his chest rise and fall. I watched his heart pulse defiance against the fragile skin of his neck, watched the flutter of his lashes as he struggled against oblivion, fighting – always fighting - to stave off the cost of mortality for just one more second, one more breath, one more heartbeat.

Such courage... I pulled him close with ethereal hands, lost for one moment in a dream left over from an unremembered mortality. What I took from his dying breath was one little kiss, but what I gave him in return was a place in an eternal heart and the honor of being Virgo’s only love...
