Description
did you know that different kinds of animals have different reflective colors of their tapetum lucidum? dogs and cats usually have green reflections, crocodilians have orangey red, some fish have white, etc… reindeer tapetum lucidum even change color over the seasons, being yellow in the summer and blue in the winterthis has been on my mind for a really long time with regards to my polumorphim, though i never actually had the opportunity to draw it out until now. im not sure what color exactly their eyes should reflect, ive personally been torn between red, yellow, or white myself since ive started working with them. im not going to leave them without reflective eyes, due to the species being largely nocturnal and the tapetum lucidum is an adaptation for seeing in low light, but theres a wide variety of colors to pick from!

I love the yellow/white, maybe bc it's the one I've seen around the most.
I had no idea reindeers' changed though, that's so cool! :0

I didn't know that about the reindeer tapetum lucidum! Thanks for sharing that. I love it when people make their characters scientifically accurate. As far as color goes from an artistic perspective, the red makes them look more monstrous, and the white makes them look more demonic. Depends on what you're going for. The yellow I'd say gives them a pretty neutral nocturnal look.

even though she might be a feather boa binding together several slabs of rib eye, i really want to pet opal.
also, to weigh in on the colors, i think blue goes well with her regular eye color, but yellow looks beautiful in the dark, and white looks like a believable reflection for her eye color. i also think white would work well for an unsettling effect when seen in the dark, since you could probably distinguish mostly the white from her fur/hair. animals usually have eyes that are a different color from the rest of them, so that lack of color contrast might look spooky.

good heavens that is the most delightfully creative description ive read for opal. i love it
tbh im more or less settled on white, theres something specifically unsettling about it, and also it works well as polum can see in a color spectrum similar to humans. the color of the eye reflection isnt so much linked to the color of the fur/scales/etc animals that have it, so much as it is linked to what color spectrums the animals can actually see

Why don't you have their eye color change? It could be triggered by the seasons, hunting, mood, etc. That way you can use more than one. Only if you're still torn over the choices that is. Or you could choose a variety of opal stone for Opal's eye reflection. They have an amazing multitude of colors, even in the more plain ones. I love your drawings so I'm sure it'll be awesome no matter what you go with ^_^.

hunting and mood is unrealistic and pushed too far towards the fantasy side of the spectrum, though ive been thinking about seasonal changes similar to reindeer. that would necessitate individuals living in locations closer to the poles, where the night and day hour difference between the seasons is great enough to facilitate the adaptation

Kinda siding with the red one. Mostly because my cat has a similar fur color and light blue eyes too, and they light up like two small red suns. So it seems fitting that they would have the same.

I always thought this was something extremely interesting myself.
Driving at night, sometimes all you get is the glint of eye color and sometimes it's that color that can help you know what you just passed.
I've also noticed that my cats have this, though mostly because I just got a Blue Eyed cat. Her reflection is almost pinky red, while my two green and gold eyed cats have the green/neon green reflection.
Science and Nature are so cool X3

Ooh, that's really interesting. Usually I've only ever heard of / seen green and white reflections, and usually I assumed white was just an effect due to seeing video captured by a night vision camera. In any case though, white is my favorite variation out of the different colors you've made. I feel like it compliments their daylight appearance the best imo. Reflected colors can change in the same species depending on their iris color though, so if you're really torn between multiple colors, that could be a way of getting a few birds with one stone? o:

I'd do a twist on the reindeer thing with the more humanoid form having one color and the more feral form with another. I also think it'd be a fun inversion if the "harmless human" had something like red while the even furrier side had white

i think the eye colour reflection is a reflection of which colours they see/can not see
like white is reflecting all light waves, so they probably can see all colours or can only see in black and white
red is reflecting only red waves, so either they can see everything but red or everything in a red filter
might be something nice to consider together with The Aesthetics™
there s also that the tapetum lucidum is iridecent so it more likely can sport a bunch of colours depending on the light wave avaliability

Yeah my dog's are like green or yellow almost depending on the lighting. Spooky Spooky!
Personally for this OC I really like the Yellow because it's such a stark difference from the pale gray/blue in daylight ^_^
Like Boon said though I really like the white too and for the same reason as I said above. I hope that helps <3

I'm weak for red n white haha
also that reindeer fact is super cool! Do the different colors have any purpose or is it more of a cosmetic thing?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
VCR-WOLFE In reply to notecardPasta [2016-11-12 21:01:57 +0000 UTC]
it has a purpose, yes! it has to do with their eyes permanently dilating according to the ambient lighting. reindeer live so far up north, that the seasonal differences between summer and winter are such that summertime has extremely long daylight hours and wintertime has long nighttime hours. the deers eyes change shape in their dilation n stuff to adjust to the light :0c
