Description WPN Battle Androids, Trin and Di, are on a much needed leave from their routine assignments to travel to the lavish space station Avante. Di insists on dragging her partner Trin out to the Central Street Shoppes - whether she's interested or not.

This is a older pic that I wanted to post on here. I didn't like how aged it was, so I went back and touched up quite a bit to make it more presentable.
Don't worry if you don't know who these two characters are. There will be more information about them in the future.

Nice work! How long did it take you to do the mall setting?

Oh man. Β If I remember, this taken me a good week just to put the whole background together. Β  Β Then I wanted to make some fixes to it after I finished the Gift pic. Β  So that taken me another week just to make all of the tweaks - including redrawing the foreground characters. Β It was a real pain, but a good learning experience at least.

Love the characters. Man, that background is incredible! So much detail. The shop signs, the people and the skyline.

I'm talking about what tools you're using.

In all honesty what tools you use matter little. It just the skills you need to be able to create such a background.

I ask because the style between your backgrounds and your characters always contrast when you do big pieces like this. So I thought you were doing something different for your backgrounds (after laying the lines down manually of course).
Everything is perfectly straight/rounded with perfect gradients. I thought you were using some pen tools in a specific program while freehanding your characters in like SAI or something.

I draw the lineart of both the characters and parts of the background in either in OC or on paper. And then I color up the entire thing in Photoshop. More often than not I'll go in and add more details, colors and textures to the background. I use a combination of layer effects, color styles, filters, multiple gradients, and freehand brushes. In some cases, I use real life imagery if I'm stuck on something.

I try to make the characters a bit contrasting to the background because the main focal point is on them.

Thought his technique isn't unique to Photoshop as I've been using the same methods and approach to drawing backgrounds with other digital and traditional applications I use. I alot of it is trial and error to get the best results for a background design.
