Ahh, the teardrop - my favourite shape to draw - starting at number 65 I don't think I've stopped in many drawings.

You can tell that you like them, hehe. I find I incorporate them a lot too (though not on the scale you do) : they're such a fundamental shape, in a way.
The way that you "string" them together is interesting, I have to study that...

What do you mean string them together? the ones that are actually touching or clusters of them not touching but creating an overall link..?

the-storkk In reply to Veganvictim [2009-01-17 17:10:58 +0000 UTC]
i just meant how you combine teardrops with other teardrops, both in "bunches" like on the bottom (and to a lesser extent, the top-right) border, and also in larger teardrops, like on the right hand side. The lower left teardrop shape is very interesting as well, how they are all combined in a way that seems quite chaotic, but flows well nonetheless.
I've found it's tough to combine teardrops, the way I've experimented with them, and not have it seem extremely static... you have avoided that totally, in my opinion.

Right - I get you now.. the natural curvature of the teardrops I use make it easy to string them together..

"easy" is a deceptive term...
but seriously, the curvatures you use might make it much easier for you to connect them to each other in the ways that you feel are necessary (i think that type of vocabulary works best for me... things don't just look "better" when they're in the place that i feel for them: _NEED_ to be where they are [hence what I call a "grammar"]).
On a deeper and more interesting (imo) note, I doubt that it's universal, though. This would be a fascinating subject to explore... I really feel that "doodles," when done well, have a true, and almost linguistic grammar to them. And just like French words with German grammar would sound grosstastic, just like the most melodic (imho, again) line in opera, "... ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me ..." wouldn't work in french at all ("mais mon mistère est enfermé en moi"... yuck!), there's something extremely subtle, but completely fundamental in how these things take shape.

I agree wholeheartedly, and I've often used the "translating mind onto paper" metaphor when people ask what I'm doing. It usually gets me a blank stare, though

Oh yes I understand, my friend Ella easily draws such fantastic hippy/pixie/colourful/bizarre drawings that I pale in comparison too, I guess we all have our fortΓ©..
I feel as if sometimes it's almost automatic - like automatic writing but in a pictoral sense - that translates my mind to paper..

You do these in pencil.. i should try that. I do all mine in ultra fine black in pens... Makes it hard to mix mistakes, but its fun cause sometimes finding a way to fix things makes it turn out better. Um, yeah ill try the pencil though...

incorporating is a must when you make a mistake using pens - but i like to have dark pencil which is very hard to rub out

I'm still amazed that you can get an HB to do such dark sections! This has a real sense of movement, from the top left to the bottom right, you can just see it sweeping round. I'm really impressed with the teardrops, they go really well.

you can get an HB to do a lot of things (short of not smudging!!) i want to do more like this - it's similar to 65 and i like them both more than any other ones i've done

a fav - thanks - yeah the borders are a must nowadays - although i'm thinking more organic and not adding one but creating one in the drawing

I like some of their art, but most of the ones that didn't sell out by now are now perma-baked.
So, it's nice to get some groovy art AND good conversation.

celaenotheharpy In reply to Veganvictim [2005-12-28 04:47:02 +0000 UTC]
heh, i hadn't even noticed the "therapy" before. it's supposed to be like celaeno the harpy, who is one of the 3 harpy sisters that make large storms in greek mythology. her name means "the dark". usually harpy is spelled harpie, but i forgot when i made my account!

I actually like using trains - subways. But it just brings the whole feel of an 90's movie, with the romantic fella sitting there on the far side of the carriage wearing his mattered leather jacket gazing out the black window, doesn't it..
Erm.. yeah. Sorry. Carring myself away there.
