Character Development: UNSEEN PERSONALITY• MOTIVATION: What is the central driving force behind most if not all of their actions? What’s the generalized concept of the reason why they do what they do? What was that kick start that they needed most?
• Example: Aerone is motivated by the knowledge and realization that something isn’t right, and that he needs to make it right. It’s his morals that drive him and will keep him dedicated with the energy he needs to get through it and build mental and physical discipline.
• NEGATIVE EMOTIONS: How does your character handle their own personal worst emotions? Any kind of emotion about them that they perceive as a negative. Do they fight against it or give in? What exactly is too negative beyond the point they’re willing to try and handle? Describe how they get out of these emotions.
• Example: Aerone typically handles his negative emotions well in that he does not usually let them affect or much less drive his actions. He maintains appropriate control, while still exhibiting that something might be bothering him. While he usually allows that to show, some amount of pride keeps him from talking about it. He prefers to let time be his biggest help and is not the type of person to seek advice with his personal problems because he doesn’t want other people troubled by it. If things come up in natural conversation, though, he may feel more comfortable mentioning it. To cheer up, he just needs to get out there and do something to better someone or something else. Or burn some incense in the comfort of his home and meditate or pray.
• BIGGEST FLAWS: Describe how your character handles their flaws. State what they are and how they impact your character as well as if they’re working to get rid of them or not—maybe they’re in total denial. How do they respond when their flaws interfere with their daily lives, or other people and situations?
• Example: Aerone is not so much in denial of his eating disorder as he is just overall uncomfortable with the idea of changing his eating habits. He wants people to accept the fact that he does not enjoy eating, and has a fear of fat. If he believes his particular views one day may be a bit skewed, he listens a bit when people try to correct his thinking so that he can hope to see the truth for what it really is. He battles his eating disorders all of his life and has various ups and downs.
• INTELLIGENCE: Not just an IQ number or the word high or low, but a description of their comprehension, adaptability, creativity, processing, assessing, and other applicable components.
• Example: Aerone’s average intelligence overall. But quick thinking and calm reasoning in tense situations can make him appear much smarter than those who would, say, panic. When it comes to battle plans, strategy, and social intelligence, he’s got the mind for it. He adapts fast and well, he assesses and makes snap judgements where time was a big factor. He’s creative in figuring out how to take out the enemy in the fastest, neatest way possible. Though his plans may have flaws, he’s pretty much always equipped with a backup. When it comes to book smarts, grades, school world, and not-so-common knowledge, he’s…passable. And he struggles in school, just to keep a decent grade.
• IQ SCORE: It couldn’t hurt to set an IQ for your character, but make sure its realistic and fits with who they are, and does not make them a Mary Sue. I’ve seen a bunch of people who pretty much only make smart characters. And that isn’t realistic at all—its predictable and boring.
• Aerone: 125
• MYERS-BRIGGS PERSONALITY TYPE: The 16 personalities free online test is a popular and fun way of categorizing based on a certain combination of traits. Taking the test as your character will help you abundantly in learning about who they are.
• Aerone: ESFJ-A
• ALIGNMENT: (Good/Evil). Describe where they stand with their morals and direction as well as how its fluctuated, if it ever has.
• Example: Aerone is strongly moral with a fierce, determined drive to do what’s good, and fights for the benefit, safety, justification, freedom, and protection of others. Morals are his backbone, ground to stand on, and his motivation. He has an undying passion for rectification and redemption of situations and people, and it grows with each person he encounters. He sees problems and tries to fix them. He fights for the people who can’t fight for themselves. It doesn’t take much to earn his loyalty.
• PET PEEVES: Describe the things that your character absolutely cannot tolerate by any means. The objects, places, noises, sounds, habits, idealisms, people, etc. that make them cringe with disdain.
• Example: Aerone's biggest pet peeves are people who are whiny, negative, bitter, and hopeless where there is always a bright side.
• MUSIC PREFERENCE: Describe what your character looks for in their music taste as well as what they hate. You can also list specific genres or people.
• Example: Aerone is a fan of soft rock and indie generally, but he picks music more song by song rather than by genre or artist. He’s prone to making a generalization that could backfire so that’s why. He likes songs with an interesting, exotic, or unique melody that conveys certain emotion to him personally. He enjoys empowering as well as peaceful music and hates sad or angry music.
