Description Taking a break from commissions to do something inspired.

Doug and Rob as Calvin & Hobbes.

Because I can think of no better fitting comparison than this.

I know. ^_^ He and Rob both also commented on it on Facebook.

I'm a little mindblown by that. And by how this has become my most faved piece of art in my gallery in 72 hours. In a 6-year-old gallery. I knew this was a good idea but I didn't forsee it being THAT good. Just goes to show... you never know when you're gonna hit on a REALLY great idea. XD

Heh, my picture of my Douchy McNitpick costume was also favorited by Doug, which made my day when I found out about it, especially since it was put together for the sake of being a fanboy. Apparently, I was very douchy that day XD

I would have come up with that if I was clever enough...
And I would have taken the liberty of having a hand at drawing this, but I already have a Nostalgia Critic spin-off character, so I don't need to steal ideas for another one.

Nostalgia Croc: Fo' sho'.

Arbok: Anyways, worthy idea. You honestly don't see a lot of Calvin and Hobbes-related stuff nowadays.

You honestly don't see a lot of Calvin and Hobbes-related stuff nowadays.

I knoooow, it's sad but slightly understandable, given Bill Waterson didn't want ANY merchandising AT ALL for his characters. I think Calvin and Hobbes is one of those things that's going to live on in a very specific age group's memory. I mean, I was about a year old when the comic began. I was 11 years old and in 6th grade when the it was discontinued. The existence of that comic literally defined my childhood, from my first steps to puberty.

The day the Washington Post ran the article about it, there was a full page image of Calvin. The article was like 3 pages long. Half of my class came in with a copy, and I still have mine somewhere. We ALL read Calvin and Hobbes every day. We ALL had the books. We ALL had our favourite Sunday strips cut out and stuck to the fridge. I don't know if that was a regional phenomenon or a coincidental thing that so many of the kids my age just KNEW that comic, but I swear to god, we held a day of mourning when that article was published. We sat around and discussed what we thought the last one was going to be, and what we thought would happen afterwards. I can still remember a time in my life when the comic actually confused me a little because I was so young, and so naive, I didn't understand why Hobbes was a stuffed animal some of the time. I remember wondering that for a long, long time and it never occurred to me that it was because Hobbes wasn't real.

Even now that I'm older and I understand, I continue to believe that he is real.

Ooooh yes. And way back when I have an entire collection of the books that would span the whole lifetime of the comic series, and I would read them so many times. I became so engrossed in the artistic style and the humor a simple grade school boy could get himself into, even though a number of them are so dialogue-heavy that I didn't get the humor of them. The collection remains up north at my parents' place, and now I am actually getting the right notion to have them mailed to me sooner than later. Or make an arrangement to bring them the next time they come down. Now that I am older, it would make sense to read them again to remember the good times and point out the humor in some of the comics I overlooked.

And name me one person who didn't say they would want a stuffed tiger doll like the one Calvin always had. Really, name me ONE... I'm sure I myself said I would like a stuffed tiger at one point in my life.

I can honestly say Calvin and Hobbes was an inspiration for me to draw, or at least one of the many things that got me to do so. Kutos to Bill Waterson for his great series from the 80s and 90s.

I know of that collection. I've considered buying it myself many times in the past. I think once I have enough cash, I really should now because I think we've finally lost, destroyed, or given away ALL of the collection books I had as a kid. And DAMN do I miss reading those.

Agreed -- I know people who made their own Hobbes tigers. I also know people -- myself included -- who took the idea a step further and just wanted a stuffed animal that went almost everywhere with them and was a BFF whose personality they could make up themselves. I didn't really have any single stuffed animal that served that purpose for me when I was a kid, but oddly now that I'm an adult, I do. I have a chicken I use when making videos and often take around with me in case I want to film something wherever I'm going. It's not QUITE the same as when I used to have imaginary friends, but he does sometimes cross the lines between fiction and reality. XD

They didn't inspire me to draw, I don't think -- I've been drawing since long before I ever knew of Calvin and Hobbes -- but they inspired a lot of other things. Hell, last year, I even tried to organize a bunch of locals to hold a Calvin & Hobbes crazy snowman day during Snowmageddon. This did not end up working because we did not just get pummeled with snow, we had more snow on the ground at one time than this city has ever had in recorded history. It came up to my friggin chest in places. And it wasn't good packing snow. But the previous snowfall, I did build my own crazy snowman. By which I mean giant snow lobster. ^____^

I don't mean the Complete set of 3 very thick books. I mean, I have the little volumes that would stack up side-by-side to become thicker than even the three-tome set. That's what is still back at home, and many of them very much worn and torn from years of use. That shows my dedication to the series.

I suppose Calvin and Hobbes is quite an idol pair for me. Hell, they even made me go out of my way to have some friends in my heads that I would talk to in order to give myself piece of mind and comfort. For me, having voices in my head is now the norm, and actually becomes a fuel for the things I do today. XP So C&H has inspired me on more than just art in that case. My crazy mind can have quite the imagination that is fueled by inspirations like this comic strip. I remember making a pumpkin for my dad's company's carving contest with Calvin's evil grin with devil horns and won a little prize for it.

I would love to have seen a crazy snowman dedication to C&H, and I would applaud on your efforts to get that off the ground. I would actually smile so hard it would get stuck just from the sight of pictures like the snowmen surrounding the one that got hit by the car or the anatomically-correct snowman facing the other way. XD
