I prefer something like what they did with Gollum in LotR, they had a guy doing all the actions for it with a green screen suit basically, so it was still pretty realistic looking and yeah, weapon work was great in that one, also the folklore accuracy was decent

Gollum was an exception, but I generally dont like CG characters. Puppets, costumes, Its always better. Original Star Wars movies for example.

Right, I know what you mean, if it looks almost entirely realistic, then I like the CG, but I've seen a lot of horrible costume and puppet work in movies and some very good

Theres nothing like good puppetry though. Have you seen John Carpenters the Thing? Out of this world (haha, Puns!)
If you can get CGI and Puppetry to compliment eachother, it can be great. But its a delicate balance.
If you really wanna see the difference though, Alien series is a good example. Alien 1 used puppetry and animatronics, Alien3 used CGI, and it SUCKED!
