Going clockwise from the top center we have the symbol for Somebodies (and any character other than was is about to be listed), then Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed, Spirit Dream Eaters, and Nightmare Dream Eaters. In the center is just a logo for Kingdom Hearts in general.

A Somebody is someone with a heart, so people like Sora, Mickey, and Riku are somebodies.

It really sticks out. They probably didn't have the idea for the heart motif when they designed it. After all, at the time there was only Somebodies and Heartless and a vague idea about what the Nobodies would be, let alone any of the other life forms.
