Description
This one is rather loaded.Gnosticism is a religion/philosophy that originated between the first and third century AD, and is heavily influenced by the philosophies of Plato and Pythagoras. Gnosticism believes in two main beings, who will both be described.
The first being is an absolute, supreme being. It goes by many names, such as Monad or The One, but, most often, is simply known as "God". The One's divine light gave form to several beings known as "Aeons", which can be considered aspects of The Absolute being as well as deities in their own right. Aeons that formed closer to The One are viewed as higher ranked, while ones that formed distant from him are considered lesser. The most distant one is known as "Sophia".
Sophia's own power managed to form a creature, however, due to her distance, it formed outside of the divine sphere of The One, creating a wicked being. Ashamed, Sophia cast the being out into the primordial chaos. This is the second being in Gnosticism, Yaldabaoth, "Son of Chaos".
Yaldabaoth was alone in the chaos and viewed itself as the most powerful being, either unaware of or uncaring about The One. He created the material universe purely to give him something to rule over, and this material universe was isolated from the immaterial universe of The One. Currently, he rules over this material universe with the assistance of six creatures he created, collectively known as the Seven Archons (Yaldabaoth is the seventh). He egotistically demands worship from the beings he created, including humans, while he callously lets them suffer.
Yaldabaoth goes by many names. "The Fool", Samael, and, most notably, Yahweh. Yaldabaoth's existence is used to explain the problem of evil, and also the discrepancies between the portrayal of God in the Old and New Testament. The wrathful and extremely direct God of the Old Testament is believed to be Yaldabaoth, while the more subtle and benevolent god in the New Testament is believed to be The One, or another emanation of theirs. Jesus Christ, another Aeon, was sent to earth, either by illusion or inhabiting a body, in order to teach about gnosis, the way to escape the grasp of the tyrannical false god.
