Description
I wanted some more practice with cell shading before starting the BAB comic, so I used a scene from the TMNT fanfic I'm writing (shameless plug: [link] ). It's from the first chapter (not prologue), but I'm not going to explain what's happening, lol.Anyway, it's also a visual help for Splinter's outfit. The uniform is seen in the episode "Tale of Master Yoshi" in the 2k3 cartoon where Yoshi (and other guardians like him) are wearing it. At the beginning of "Exodus part I" Splinter is seen wearing it as well in a vision. In my fanfic he wears it pretty much all the time however.
Little turtle! (He's five years old here.)
From scratch in Photoshop CS3, 6 hours. ([link] )

It's a shirt ^_^ In the story they wear shirts in "their" colors for partially sentimental reasons.

Okay... So I just sat down and read the whole piece of fan fiction you just did...
HOLY FREAKIN' HELL DUDE... Why ain't you working for the TMNT group!!!! That story is AMAZING!
Dude, I actually almost cried reading about the turtles losing there mom... Which is saying somethinig, cause I'm the kinda person that actually cracked a joke when the kid bought it in "Pay it Forwards"
Question though- what's this about a 2k3 series?!? I know about the 1987 series, and the 2003. Is this on tv- or is it a comic book? Where can I see it? Cause after reading your story, I've GOT to see the rest.
Keep up the writing- cause you've got a knack for it (some of the BEST fan fiction I've read in years)... And I love the picture- especially because I know the complete story behind it.

Thank you thank you 2k3 is 2003, just written differently, lol, lazy people ^_^
Anyway, I'm about a third into the next chapter now that I have some free time again, so it'll be updated again, yay! Thanks again for the compliment ^_^

My pleasure... Always have been a turtles fan, always will be.
Truth be told- you actually inspired me to start on my own series that I've thought up over 10 years ago, and just did nothing with it. (has to do with the images MACO 001, and MACO 002) in my gallery.
Look forward to reading more!

Inspiration is awesome, it's like passing on a virus, but a good one
I read the descriptions below those images, and I really like what you came up with. Obviously I'm a sucker for "what if" stories, and you got yourself a really nice one there. Is there more to it so far than those pieces? ^_^

Got to love those good virus'.
I'm glad you like the designs. It's always fun to come up with ideas, cause I never really know what a character is going to be like until I draw him/her. A lot of time I actually just start drawing with only a basic idea, and I learn/create the character as it forms on paper. lol- I'm a sucker for the "what ifs" too. (I have S-O many of them, Transformers, Alice in Wonderland, Heroes, Hell- even a Marvel/Startrek crossover idea) Just don't have time to touch them. (alas)
I've got plans for different characters- 5 in all for the Alpha squad of the MACO units. (001 is in that one), but just don't have time to draw them now. I'm getting ready for the summer art show season- so all my times going into that. (problem with doing art for a living, sometimes the fun "one-off" stuff that you really want to do, you can't.)

VGiselleH In reply to CYBERBUTTERFLY [2010-03-13 23:49:46 +0000 UTC]
That's true, sometimes other art stuff just has to come first. And sometimes not even art, but just plain life gets in the way of the little projects
While I don't go about creating a character like that, I do notice that when I finally get around to drawing them out suddenly a lot of extra info starts to pop up, mostly background information and their past. Funny how that goes ^_^ I'm curious about the other squad members still stuck inside your head though, it really does look, sound and feel promising. Maybe after the summer has gone by they'll find their way out
And yeah, I have what ifs from other genres in my head as well, but I doubt they'll ever escape, though funny enough a few Star Trek and Star Wars ones tried very hard to come outside and play. I do like your taste in series though! ^_^

Yeah.... Sometimes, life SUCKS.
Do you find that its the same with writing? While I haven't done a lot of fan fiction, I've done a little; and I find it gets to the point where the characters really just start to write themselves. It's neat, cause I find sometimes that a character will say/do something that even takes ME by surprise.
Well... The images will take a while, but at least I can TELL you about them (in brief)
005- aka: Bugs
Male
Species type: Rabbit (secondary animal types: Polar Bear, Jumping mouse, and Dolphin)
Personal Motto: If I'm gonna dine in hell one day, I'm dragging all the bastards with me."
Physical Characteristics: Stands at 5' 5" tall, making him one of the shortest of the group. He is almost completely white, with a gray patch around his ears and neck. He is the most well rounded fighter. With powerful muscles, great speed, and incredible hearing.
Because they were created in labs, the first experiments were done with typical lad animals. Rats, Rabbits, Monkeys, etc. (001 being the exception- she was an accident)
Bugs is the most aggressive of the group. He has limited regard for humans- and has no problem with taking a life because of it. While this can make him a pain to work with, he also has a deep sense of loyalty to his "animal bretheren" and is fearless in battle. Very much a loner in nature, he often keeps his distance from the group- not letting anyone get close.
042- aka Power Puff
Female
Species: Black Widow (secondary: Praying Mantis, Tiger, and Black Mamba)
Personal Motto: More than likely, the light at the end of the tunnel, is the headlight of an oncoming train.
Physical Characteristics: Stands at 6' 9" tall. Is primarily black, with some lighter stripes running down her sides. A red hour glass mark is visible between her shoulder blades. 042's most unique characteristic is that she has an extra pair of arms (keep folded at her back until she needs them)- which are primarily used in close combat melee attacks.
She is incredibly powerful, with enormous strength, and an amazingly durable exoskeleton. With an insects ability to walk on walls and ceilings, she prefers using stealth attacks.
042 was one of the most experiment of the MACO's, with a wide mix of animal DNA added to her genetic code. Because of this wide inbalance in DNA, she can sometime be unstable.
Despite her unbalanced nature, as well as her look- she is actually one of the friendliest and most playful of the group. Loving a good prank, as well as making people laugh- she finds great joy in using her appearance and abilities for good natured high-jinks. With that said, when situations get tough, and the team is in a bad spot- she has no problem taking care of business; both with her skills and her razor sharp wit.
057 aka Heinz
Male
Species: Wolf (secondary: coyote, Boxer-Kangaroo, and Alligator)
Male
Personal Motto: WWBD? (What Would Batman Do)
Physical Characteristics: Stands at 10'2"- making him one of the tallest of the MACO's. His fur runs between black to grey- with his general appearance not unlike that of a werewolf's. With a thick hide and powerful build, he is one of the hardest of Alpha Squad to bring down. With canine DNA, he sense of smell is primary hunting/tracking sense. Bright yellow reptilian eyes are his most stunning feature- they glow in darkness.
057 is one of the most successful of the MACO experiments. His powerful build and fierce size make him a natural soldier. That being the case, it is not without irony that he is in fact one of the gentlest and most peaceful of the MACO's. With a kind heart, and an almost parental nature towards his fellow soldiers, Heinz is the perfect addition to the Alpha Squad. Able to calm even the most hot headed with a glance, and remain cool headed in even the worst of situation.
One of the only times he ever "loses it" is when his fellow team mates are in trouble. It takes some doing, but when 057 gets mad- than even hell trembles.

I love it! Such short descriptions, but already they feel detailed. What a literal teaser you just gave me, lol With every description I thought that they could compete for "my favourite" so to speak in the MACO team, till I read the next description and they took the honors, and so on
Heinz seems to be the one with the least info though, or maybe the biggest mystery. I'd love to see what Power Puff looks like though, you don't see mutant spiders very often, or not on the side of good anyway! ...if they can be described as being on the side of good since they attack the "official" good guys, lol. Ah well, as you already noticed I'll be stalking you for more info some time in the future ^_~
As for writing, yes! For this fanfiction, writing the dialogues in particular tends to reveal things even I didn't know yet. Or suddenly pull the story in a different direction than intended. Already three extra chapters have been inserted because of this, lol. And the chapter I'm writing now came to a screeching halt because I wanted something to happen that the characters weren't ready for, it wasn't until I realized this, and changed the time line for events to happen a little, that I managed to continue writing. Of course time is an issue again. When I have time I prefer to work on visual art, it relaxes me, so only when I have extra free time does writing get a chance to be continued.

hehehe.... Thanks, I'm glad that the description helps.
Heinz IS the least hashed out- simply because he was the last one I created in my head, and the least "drawn out" in there as well. I'm starting to learn more and more about him though, and I think he's actually turning into one of my favourites. One the surface, I thought him to be very one-dimentional, but he's starting to show me things that suggest he may actually be one of the most complex characters of the group.
Basically, he's a gentle giant. I like to play against type.
A turtle is fast, agile and leads the team
A rat is the brains and neat freak of the group
A rabbit is the most aggressive and vicious
A spider is fun loving, care free, motherly one
And a werewolf (in appearance) is the gentle, kind, "give peace a chance" one.
That's SO cool about writing. And it makes things SO much easier (in a way) because then, if your writing something "wrong" the characters will tell you (as you've already told me about).
I know with my little piece (Heroes related) sometimes someone would crack a joke, or do something really clever/ unexpected/ off-the-cuff and I would literally burst out laughing at my computer.
I've always loved having writing as my fall back. I'm usually too busy to even think about writing something; but those times when I have major artist block and can't get a brush to canvas to save my life, I can always go to the computer and write something. And usually, it helps get me back into the mood of drawing- so it's a win-win.

I've never considered going to writing when having artist block, though logically that makes a lot of sense, because writer's block will send me straight to my drawing tablet I'll have to give that one a shot when it happens, thanks!
I sort of got the gentle giant vibe from Heinz, seemed pretty much what he was about, but with a little more...something behind it. Guess that would be the mystery behind him that doesn't show just yet ^_^
And a rabbit being the most aggressive, lol, like the bunny in Monty Python's Holy Grail movie, he seemed pretty freaky dangerous to me as well!

LOL... Actually- ALL the animals are based (loosely) off of something else.
The Rabbit- IS actually a nod to the killer rabbit in Holy Grail.
Galileo is tribute to Nicodemus (from Secret of Nimh)
Power Puff is inspired from Charlette's Web
Heinz... Well, Heinz WAS based off of Silverbolt from Beast Wars... But he's change SO dramatically from that, I really can't say that anymore.
Anyway- I've actually done a slight rough sketch of Heinz, and MAN have I learned a LOT about this character.
First off. YES, he is a gentle giant. The last character to resort to violence, a character who would put anyone on the team ahead of himself. BUT, now I know why, and I know he's a lot more complex than when first seen.
He was the greatest success the company had at creating a super solider. Both in strength, size, and personality. Because they worked out the "kinks" in earlier trials, he is practically flawless in design. One thing they didn't count on was him learning about religion.
See, to begin with, Heinz was everything they hoped for. Vicious, strong, unwavering in his hunts, and unquestioning. The true perfect solider. And he ENJOYED the hunts- the killing- it fed into his predator nature. That was, right up until he started surfing the web.
While the company keeps strict tabs on the animals, they do let them surf the web and watch TV- to the scientist, it's just another part of the experiment. Heinz learned about various religions, and the beliefs that apply to the whole (common threads) and he started thinking, then he started to reflect, and then he started to change.
While not adherring to one particular creed, he instead imbraces the whole- and began to change his personality according to those beliefs. He began to learn to sympathize with people, to put others first, and to even go as far as to love others.
Naturally, this made the company spitting mad (and ensured that TV, computer privledges went out the window) and they tried everything from brainwashing to torture to get there "weapon" back.... Didn't take. See, Heinz is stubborn, and they more they said NO- the more he refused to break.
Eventually, they wrote him off and stuck him in the regular program- where he proved to be a valuable addition to the group. Still, the memories linger from what the company did to him- and while he may WISH to live a better life- he still struggles with his old nature.
He may at first glance to appear to be harmless, and he truly tries- but theres a darkness that runs through. And if anyone is stupid enough to drag it to the surface- then hell has no fury like his. He literally becomes a uncontrolled beast, killing everyone foolish enough to get within reach- sometimes jepordizing the very people he's swore to protect (Alpha Squad)

Wow, that really is quite some character exploration! An it totally makes sense as well, including that darker depth somewhere beneath the surface. Nobody is perfect, and a little self battling is only that much more realistic, because everybody has their inner demons. Even if usually it's a lot more subtle than is the case with him And you got got all that from just doing a rough sketch?? Amazing how that works!

Thanks
When creating a character I start with 20 second drawings. It helps me get the form and 'feel' of a character (half the time, anybody else wouldn't even know what the image was)
When I was drawing him, I used Copic pens, and although I was keeping the character light (standing, sitting, non-aggressive poses) I found that there was a broad dark line that became prevelant in all of them. Some of it represented his strength, but that's were I "learned" that he also has a VERY definitive dark streak.
However, throughout the dark lines, ran colours of purple, blue, red, etc.. And these are colours associated with royalty- which told me that his darkness is counter acted by nobility.
The "religious" idea, actually came because of one sketch that had him reading a book. For this one, his colour palate had completely changed- almost going completely pastel.
Reading into that, and the other poses, I just started to fill in the "whys", "hows" and "Whom" of the character. It eventually all came out in about an hour.
Ultimately, it was one of those cases (as happens a LOT) where my subconscious is W-A-Y smarter than my Conscious.

I always tend to draw sketch a character AFTER having created them and set them in stone. It wouldn't hurt to try this trick though, actually, it sounds like a very good plan to try at least once, lol. Then maybe the little things you normally discover afterwards will pop up in advance for once
And yay for a smart subconscious! I've seen on shows where they somehow disable one half of the brain, then have the other one do the answering for once where your subconscious is housed (veeery simply explained). That always looks so incredibly interesting, lol, I wonder what would happen if that could be done for real (as in not only in tv shows) and as easily as they show it, what would my normally submissive brain half have to say??
So, this got really off topic, didn't it? Ha, but it got better though ^_~
