New Tricks is a young street performer. she learns all the magic tricks she can from all the older magicians she meets. though shes a unicorn she refuses to use her magic for her tricks, she wants to do them the old way, the same way the earth ponies do. she feels like using her real magic is cheating.
she doesnt make much money from it, only what ponies passing by give her but she isnt doing it for the cash, its her dream. she travels from place to place, only taking with her what she can fit into her little cart and her magical bag of tricks.

a long while ago Heartache had a friend, a young stallion. they were inseparable and closer than any brothers would be. one day Heartache told the stallion how he felt, he told the stallion he loved him, assuming he felt the same way. he couldnt have been more wrong. the stallion ridiculed him, hated him, even hit him then walked away forever. heartbroken the young heartache sewed his mouth shut so he would never tell anyone else those three words, never feel that pain of rejection ever again.

Basil's folks died when he was rather young, he doesnt remember them at all. he was raised by his older brother River Raft who works as a ferryman across the river they live by. because Basil didnt have much interest in learning his brother's trade he had a lot of free time on his hands. one fay he found a wild herb growing in the forest, he'd seen it in the kitchen before so he picked it and brought it home. his brother told him all about it and how he can cook with it. next time his brother went into the town he brought back a book for Basil, all about herbs that grew in their forest. Basil then went about collecting them up and growing them in his little garden
