At my word a quick, deep inhale each started them off and as they both blew into their bottles I sort of hoped Jake would have a choking fit or suffer an uncomfortable blowback. He’d picked Jo, who for all of her tough acting was the most sensitive of the bunch. And who had come in last in Vegas - two weeks without cigarettes wouldn’t make much of a difference. Any other choice had made him look better.
(To be fair, there was a chance he hadn’t seen the vid. But still. She’d lost against Nita too by a small margin.)
But nothing of the sort happened. Sam clapped her hands with excitement when Jo overcame the initial resistance and managed to blow the oblong pouch out of shape, turning the bottle into a balloon. Both flasks stretched with the pressure until they were almost spherical and then started to grow.
The audience was audibly wowed by the sight. Many had likely never seen this done - at least not in real life.
Jo was focusing hard on the task, and blowing even harder. Her face had taken on a darker hue with the effort and her cheeks puffed out more than usual. She stood her ground, methodically bending over to expel as much air as possible with each breath. Jake did much the same with an ease that suggested practice.
Jo was huffing faster and faster and I hoped the whole thing would be over before she collapsed. But something was happening there. Jo wasn’t about to slow down - she kept speeding up.
I’d never seen any of the girls blow in such a frenzy, and the unbelievable pace threw Jake off his game. He tried accelerating too, but couldn’t match the sheer violence of her exertions. By combining force of will and lung power, Jo overtook him and kept going, the thick rubber now bulging dangerously.
All the girls hooted and whistled for her, as did the spectators. We were cheering our lungs out, and if you think I’d be neutral in those circumstances you’re dead wrong.
Blow, Jo! Show him!
With supporters both in front and at her back, Jo maintained the furious tempo. Her face was red and shiny but she’d win or die trying.
