*These are entirely fictional creatures of my own design*

In addition to the anatomy series, I figured I’d do an ecology series à la Monster Hunter, with this piece being the first in the series. I’m not too familiar with underwater scenes, as I’ve done so few of them, so this was a major challenge even compared to relatively complex land scenes. Can’t say I’m a 100% satisfied with this, but it did help me practice underwater renders.

......................................................................................................................................................................

A young titan drake (Dirosuchus maximus) diving deeper towards its usual feeding waters to hunt for fish and squid has unwittingly caught the attention of a large tiamat (Typhoneustes regius). Eyeing a substantially large potential prey, the sea serpent rushes forward and broadsides the drake, but instantly realises that it's made a fatal error.

While its large, sharp teeth are effective at maiming large cephalopods and marine mammals, the drake's foot-thick armoured hide is a different matter. Failing to disable it has given the drake enough of an opening to turn the tables, clamping its monumentally powerful jaws around its adversary's neck. While the sea serpent too has thick skin, the sheer force of the bite instantly breaks its neck, causing massive internal trauma and effectively crippling it. The drake may have lost some potential prey, but this is a far more substantial kill, while the sea serpent clearly has made the mistake of biting off more than it can chew one time too many.

Edit: Made it more realistic using a different rendering approach.

The Draconimorpha
The Therosuchia
The Thalattophidia
