i just adore the insane tragedy that is Azulai'm also trying out some new painting methods... it isn't really working, but eh. i'll try some more tomorrow

Because Azula is this extremelly talented, powerful, smart yet broken girl who is crushed by the absence of her mother and her tyrannical father who tolerates her for her skill and not herself etc. She is crushed by the pressure and by her own mental instability.
I like to draw her either smiling smugly, or simply letting go (either just looking sad, like in this picture, or angry and whatnot).

It kinda did. Though I think you left out a major part of her character in this. The part of her that is quite frankly a manipulative, sadistic sociopath.
