As it turned out, the dressage went quite smoothly. Whether it was destiny or mere chance, both Sarika and Aileen benefited greatly from each other´s presence.
But today it was time for the jumping. Her favourite. Usually. Only today it was raining and the arena turned into a mud field. Puddles and slippery surface joined forces with strong sunlight and sharp reflections. It might have as well been a competition of the best spook or slip-up.
Sari and Nilou waited by the entrance for the pair before them to finish their round. Only it was cut short by a nasty fall.
She still had the image of the horse slipping right after a landing, getting thrown off balance and rolling over his rider burned into her eyes. The bell rang and the timer started.
Keep an even tempo. No sharp turns. You will be safe. She repeated that over and over. The first jump was simple and easy and they cleared it without an issue.
Nilou tried to speed up, but Sari held her back. The mare didn´t appreciate that and was thrown off center on the next jump.
The third jump came into view. It was huge and flashy, with a giant puddle right in front of it. She pulled the reins back in panic.
Nilou focused on the jump and sped up, leaning to the side to cut a corner. There was no stopping her. Sari released the reins a little, hoping for the best. Nilou took off from the middle of the puddle, spraying mud everywhere. She flew over the jump in a great arc.
Nilou wasn´t intimidated by anything, certainly not something as foolish as some water. She knew exactly what she was doing. And so did Sarika. They were no beginners. They were a team.
Those before them were afraid and getting into each other´s way, causing problems. Sarika refused to fall into that trap. She leaned into the mare´s instincts and helped her do her job.
