This movie is not half as bad as people make it out to be. Great effects and setting, the acting wasn't so impressive and the fact that they spoke English was wacky. It should have been R rated however. Watching monsters get minced is not as fun without seeing their innards become outwards.

In what way? This guy barely moves his eyes, or any part of his face. When did his eyes show emotion? When Kai was "sad" about his master's death or when his girl friend cried and he blankly stared into the room? How and when did he show emotions with his eyes?

Vilenchik In reply to Asanbonsam [2014-05-06 20:07:59 +0000 UTC]

On my opinion, Reeves definitely gave eastern mentality, in this case, the warrior mentality, when it is difficult to read by his face what it is happening in the soul. For me the indicator of good play of eye is their effect on the soul of the viewer, so, I can tell, based on my own emotions)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Asanbonsam In reply to Vilenchik [2014-05-08 05:15:59 +0000 UTC]

That is pretty much the most generic, clicheΒ and downright lazy answer you could have given. This says absolutely nothing apart from "you made it up in your mind." This "based on my own emotions" and "when it is difficult to read by his face what it is happening in the soul" is saying just that, plus pretty bad grammar. It was made up in your head.
And as or this "gave eastern mentality", if this movie had his character be like that he would have known instantly that something was up when he saw that white "fox", especially after the rampaging monster. Foxes are a pretty significant part of Japanese religion still and more so back then. A white fox definitely is regarded either as an omen or that a fox is playing its magic upon you.

Actually I didn't try anything. I said my opinion about the picture and Reeves' bland performance and then you started to say its allegedly good and I asked why and then you came with this"answer" that to me sounded not only incredibly cliche (the whole "eastern mentality" thing) butΒ like its all in your head and you just made it up because your areΒ a Reeves fan. I didn't try to persuade you in any way.

Perhaps, all of it was started with your question "In what way?")

Asanbonsam In reply to Vilenchik [2014-05-09 15:57:02 +0000 UTC]

Well I am curious. When I saw him in that film I was all: move a muscle dammit! Barely anything moved there, it was like he was playing some sort of sociopath, the guy playing the younger Kai did a much better job at portraying emotions but Reeves barely did anything. It was so bad I wondered for a few seconds whether I suffered from some sort of reverse other race effect because I could read so much on the faces on the Japanese actors but not on the white American one.
Where do you see anything there?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vilenchik In reply to Asanbonsam [2014-05-09 16:30:23 +0000 UTC]

When I want to see something, I look into the eyes, the facial expressions (affectation) for me is secondary. All that I needed, I saw in Reeves play, so I tried to image according my modest skills my feelings in this work.
Finally, let me close this discussion, please)

It's that bad?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Asanbonsam In reply to burningrage8-13 [2014-05-05 18:52:08 +0000 UTC]

In my eyes yes. It's not as though actors in general in the movie seemed to have much to work with but he didn't even seem to try. He usually barely moves a muscle, he is too old for the role, the bad guys stay way behind their possibilities, you notice how much the film was reshot to give Reeves' character a bigger role and quite frankly I have no idea why his character is there to begin with since he clearly doesn't exist in the original story and you can't even say that Reeves is an actual people's magnet anymore. Not to mention the whole "half-blood" thing is so ridiculous, even the highest percentage of Chinese ancestry for Reeves I ever came across is 1/4 (the lowest 1/64) and the only reason why he looks "half-Japanese" is because when you are half you can still turn out white, seen it all, but the problem is: the movie plays in the 18th century, so especially high ranking Japanese lords must know how especially Dutch and British people look like, so why on earth would anyone of the characters think Reeves' character Kai is a half-breed when he looks nothing like any of them and his parents are unknown to them? At least we must assume that... the movie is not very kind in this regard.
Also seeing his bad acting and the others at least decent acting (like I said not much to work with) makes it even worse: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBzm8l… (Beware Spoiler!). What you see there is the face he has throughout the majority of the movie. He was so bland that for a few seconds I actually contemplated the idea that I might suffer from reverse other race effect, that I can read the faces of the Japanese actors but not of the only white guy there.
Some say he has good chemistry with the other male lead, but I don't see it.

And that is just the acting. Technically the film has everything you would need. The landscapes are good, the effects at its worst decent, it has magic, intrigue, death, monsters and fights. But still its boring. The story doesn't manage to keep your interest, the fight scenes areΒ boring and without suspense, the whole thing seems often so forced and in case of the bad guys you constantly have to ask yourself, why they don't do more. I mean if that witch can transform into a dragon, why didn't she do that when the Ronin attacked instead of attacking on Kai and his girlfriend? Btw. that was a reshot scene.
And speaking of the witch. Apart from the Samurai stuff and things connected with it, in my eyes the film completely ignored Japanese culture at the time.
The Tengus... well I understand why some think they look like Voldemort from the first Harry Potter film, especially when seen from the front. But either way, they are rather some bald, beak-nosed, birdeyed monks then the long-nosed, human like beings with wings on the back as in folklore.
Another good example is towards the start of the film when Reeves sees the white witch in the form of a fox, who barely looks like an actual fox. Now in that form she has completely white fur and, as in human form, two different eye colors. For an actualy Japanese of the time this would be clear signs that this is a magical fox and so he would probably tell someone, but Kai doesn't say a word, doesn't seem to consider that anything is up, since white foxes (just like black ones) can be considered an omen.

Ok I better stop now, in the end, the most truthful thing about the movie is that I found it boring as hell and I feel bad for the Japanese actors. They are stars and they worked in this crap. But I don't feel bad for Reeves, he deserves every criticism.
