Description
Portrait Iโve been working on recently. Pretty pleased with how the eyes turned out especially.
Whitewashing aside has anyone seen the new Ghost In the Shell Movie, Iโm considering seeing it in the cinema purely for the visuals. What did everyone think of the film?Related content

Very nice!
As for the movie, I'm a big fan of the original manga and the first animated film which departed from the manga somewhat.
I took my son to see this a couple days ago and it was a stinker. The pacing was bad--to the extent that someone down the aisle from us fell asleep halfway through the film and was snoring. There are a couple parts that don't make sense--in a "how did we get here from a moment ago" type of way. As in bad editing left a connecting part out. I expected visuals to be good, but honestly wasn't that impressed. The cityscapes in particular seemed fake. There were a lot of shots directly taken from the anime, which became an annoying reminder of a much better film.

Personally, I'm not too up in arms about the Major being played by a caucasian. She's a human brain in a cyborg body, so I don't see it as that big of a deal. (Bear in mind that I haven't seen the new movie yet.)

I have seen it. I've never seen the original to compare it to, but I actually really enjoyed it and I intend to see it again. It's a really gorgeous movie, and surprisingly emotional. The white-washing controversy has turned into a really big deal, but the way it plays out in the movie is actually a lot less bad than people make it seem. I won't spoil anything though, but I will say that Takeshi Kitano was just EPIC, and being white is not necessarily portrayed as a good thing. The exposition's pretty slow and it takes a while to grow in to itself, but the later parts are really good. Def worth seeing (and by the way, wonderful artwork. You captured her perfectly!)

Thank you! Yeah I mean I understand the controversy with the white washing , doesn't mean the film will be bad though. They are separate issues. You're swaying me to go see it in the cinema lol. I'm just trying to work out ifย I should see it on big screen or wait till it's released.

Yeah, well I won't try and tell you what to do in that regard. Glad I can help you in making your decision though ย

Nice comment. Despite what everyone else thinks, it isn't white washing. It's just that people don't exactly think for themselves so everyone is agreeing with eachother that it is. I love GITS and I plan on seeing the movie someday!

Thanks and I agree with you. It's pretty frustrating how every review says the same thing (people barely even paraphrase each other!) and then people decide not to even give the movie a chance. From what those reviews say too, I feel like they probably haven't even watched the movie, or definitely went in without an open mind. I literally saw a headline today that said "Ghost in the Shell: Emotionally Hollow" and I was like wtf? that's why I spent the last 1/3 of the movie pretty much crying? So yeah, glad to hear you'll go see it regardless

You're welcome yeah, it is quite ridiculous, isn't it? For people to be anime/manga fans, I can't believe they don't realize that every country does the same thing. They "wash" it in whatever they want to. Ever watched the anime "Witchblade"? Well, that's Top Cow's! They are American and the Japanese made it, well, Japanese even though they didn't necessarily have to.
The same with Shingeki no Kyojin. So, I don't think it is as much of a big deal as people want it to be.

Yeah, definitely. For example, I saw a few articles that interviewed actual Japanese fans, and they had absolutely no problem with the casting. Why? Because how they see it, if the film was made in Japan, everyone would be Japanese, and if it's made in a Western country, naturally it makes sense that everyone would be white. Where the problem comes in, is for the Asian people who live in the Western world and have faced discrimination in all sorts of things including the film industry. It's real, and there are a lot of cases where it's valid such as The Last Samurai and Doctor Strange (there's a lot of debate surrounding this one, but to say the least I had a bad taste in my mouth watching it despite how it was a good movie) to name a couple. In this particular case though, it's not. They're living in an Asian futuristic setting surrounded by all sorts of different cultures, and it's highlighted. Even though Scarlett Johansson plays Major, a character definitively made out to be Asian in the story, she is literally playing her robotic shell. Her ROBOTIC, UNIMPORTANT, SHELL for Pete's sake. I thought they actually paid a pretty darn good tribute to Asia in the movie, and I mean like, Takeshi Kitano doesn't speak a word of English the whole film, and he's got a lot of lines. Anyway, I'll stop talking. I wouldn't want to spoil too much for you

I agree with every single word you said! I'm actually very glad that I can have a conversation about it with someone who knows what their talking about instead of being so black and white about the situation.

Haha, thank you, I definitely do try to stay in the gray area of black and white. It's hard to find places to have a civil conversation containing topics such as race and with open-minded people, so I appreciate it as well ย

awesome! I think she is spot on! No doubt
I plan to go watch the movie later this month/beginning of May, perhaps.
I was a huge fan of the original animated movie, its music and mindblowing artwork

Thank you! Yeah I found the original very influential visuals wise, though I wasn't a huge fan of the actual story itself. I mainly want to see the film for the visuals, just trying to work out if it's worth paying the extra to see it in the cinema lol
