Do you use DIY stencils or do you just use a ton of painter's tape?

Just a ton of painters tape, salt and liquid latex masking fluid

I completely stripped this one down before painting, yes. It's just way easier to do it this way than trying to keep paint from gumming up the mechanisms, and it allows you to properly prepare the surfaces for painting, especially where there might be friction that could possibly strip the paint off.

Apart from the lack of space for the foregrip, I was thinking of this as more of a carbine rifle style than a tactical, but then I put the holo-scope on there, and now I don't know what it is to be honest

No performance upgrades on this one - I shortened the muzzle and constructed a small facade to hide the hole, as seen here:
