There aren't alternate endings. At the end of the game, one of the ghost-women from the previous ones explains that Desmond can either release this devil woman, and stop a lethal solar wave from the sun, or don't release her and let humanity get kicked back to the Dark Ages. He chooses to let the woman go and prevent the problem and the release kills him.
The new person revisiting his sequences doesn't really have a character. It's just a nameless, faceless, voiceless protagonist.

Yeah I have AC3 on pc, I just kinda got pissed about Desmond dying. And I do believe he released Minerva.
So I'm guessing AC4 is all about the main assassin, and the one visiting the dna memories doesn't really matter.

He died at the end of Assassin's Creed 3, decided to save humanity and the world or some shit instead of saving himself and becoming the peoples leader like the second Jesus or something.... and after Subject 16 went to the trouble of saving his life.... what a bitch.

if you think about it this has to be the way they end the series since you are always interacting with the assassins in the current time they have to make their move sooner or later, I just hope its as cool as this :3
