I always liked her. My all time favorite episodes were when she beat the crap out of Peter, and when she finally stood up for herself and told Peter, Lois and Chris how she felt about the way they all treated her.

I do not understand people who actually buy the idea that Meg is ugly ... Meg is "Lois's face," it just is not as exuberant. Peter and Chris are just awful, but no woman rejects them on the show so much as boys reject Meg
Perhaps the joke is based on how much female beauty is important, in contrast to the appearance of men, along with the joke of the old movies where girls were ugly because they wore glasses and dowdy clothing. Only the joke that lead to the ultimate consequences in the show, as a joke and criticism, fail.
