I lived in Vancouver for 2 years (about 10 years ago) and I think I shot this clock a dozen times. Isn't it just the funnest thing to get? Wait for the steam to go off and click!

How did you like Vancouver? I use to live in Toronto, it took me a while to get use to the rain here.
About the clock, yes, it is the funniest thing. Noisy thing, but a beautiful clock.

It's a gorgeous city to visit but I ended up making alot of bad decisions from day one. The rain was incessant the summer I left. I should have been patient to make a second call to someone I knew on the island and move there instead. It would have saved me a world of difficulty. I had my dog Monday [link] in tow.

But from a photography perspective, I managed to get alot of shots in, many showing up in here.

Altogether, Vancouver was a rough experience for me. It was the first place I'd ever lived in where I got broken into... 3 times. On one break-in, I had my first Canon AE-1 rig stolen which included a 300mm lens. Funny though, had the thieves looked underneath the camera pack, they would have found a more expensive Arri ST 16mm motion picture camera. My friend's insurance gave me a second chance and I replaced it with a new Canon FD series ensemble which I still have and use today. Plus, Columbia Academy, a video production school I signed on with was blacklisted from the local industry and it put me into debt more than anything. I think they've upped their standards since.

It took me almost 9 months to find a job. I poured out 40 resumes the first 2 days I was there and followed up without so much as getting an interview for dishwashing. If only I had had experience in construction going in. They don't like easterners very much there. If I'd go back, I'd make sure I had work waiting for me instead. So there were alot of downs countered with a few ups along the way. As beautiful as it may be, it is, after all, the wild west. Not exactly the Lotusland people had sold me on. I shoulda knowed. BC means Business. BC means "Bring Cash" [link]

Wow, you did have a rough experience! Good thing you had your doggy with you, by the way she was very cute.
The job market is better these days with the Olympics coming up. It took me two weeks (in the year 2000) to find my job. I still miss Toronto, specially on rainy days. My husband is from BC so that made it a bit easier in my case.
I don't live in Vancouver, it is way crowded for my taste, but I have to travel there for work everyday. Yuck!

I'm hoping we (my beloved and I) get to take the train across the country all the way to Vancouver. I'd really rather show her what's around Vancouver and maybe Victoria, Bridal Falls in Squamish as well as to try and find somewhere that sells Nanaimo bars in... Nanaimo. Last time I went into a bakery there and asked, they had no clue what I was talking about. That wasn't the reaction I was expecting. We'll get numerous shots from the train I'm sure. I just hope they have a dome car.

Good idea, it is one of my dreams to go across Canada in a train. We took the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Calgary 2 years ago. It was fun, but they don't stop for photo taking. Still managed to get a few decent shots from the moving train. Now they run the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Whistler too.
No Nanaimo bar in Nanaimo? That is a shame and hilarious at the same time.

You're always welcome Violet. I've been to Vancouver only three times. The last time was about nine years ago. I've actually been to Seattle more *bad Canadian*! I have some relative in and around Vancouver (the type to avoid). Your city is beautiful and in a wonderful setting but the rain drives my sinuses crazy..

Good thing the relatives live far away from you then
The rain is the only thing I hate about Vancouver too.

If I want to take a shot of this without tourists I have to go there at 5 in the morn. I will probably do that so I can use my tripod. The lights are so nice at night. Thanks Gloria.

Beautiful clock and great shot!

Didn't realize you were using a A700 now. I'm jealous - but I will have to be happy with my A100 for awhile.

I just got my Alpha 700 two weeks ago. Still in the 'honeymoon' stage. Love it so far!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GeorgeDawg In reply to Violet-Kleinert [2008-01-17 13:22:55 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine. I bought my A100 used on eBay a couple of months ago and have fallen in love with it. But it does have a few shortcomings that I have to deal with. Would love the A700 but it will be awhile before I can even think about that. And the A100 is a nice camera.

If you don't mind me asking - what lens did you get with it?

Thanks

I got the DT 16-105, I am hoping to get a macro one soon!

GeorgeDawg In reply to Violet-Kleinert [2008-01-18 12:57:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the info. I have seen that lens online and it sounds like a real nice lens. As many flower shots as you take, you definitely need a macro lens. With the A100, I have the DT18-70 which I like a lot. I also bought a used Minolta 75-300 lens. I love it for getting in close. It takes nice photos but is slow on the auto focus which means sometimes I miss some animal shots when it can't focus in quick enough.

Violet-Kleinert In reply to GeorgeDawg [2008-01-19 02:42:43 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome, thanks also for the info on the KM lens. I know a lot of them are compatible with the alphas, it is good to know how well they work. If you do get any additional ones let me know.
