Description
The few canonically gay characters from The Simpsons. The more notable and recurring ones are Waylon Smithers and Patty Bouvier, though Smithers used to be "Burns-sexual" until latter on. All the others are one-time characters:Karl from "Simpson and Delilah",
John from "Homer Phobia" (voiced by and modeled after John Waters!), and
Grady and Julio from "Three gays of the condo".
All these characters are very stereotypical (except maybe Karl), but since the whole show is based on stereotypes and making fun of them, they never become offensive (at least to me).
Didn't include Duffman (there are several and at least one of them is either gay or bi) or the steel mill workers ("Everybody dance now!"). And of course, there's the over-abundance of gay jokes at the expense of several heterosexual male characters (females almost never get them, huh), but they are only done for laughs, so they don't count.
First time using markers. Didn't like it, I'll stick with watercolor pencils.

I don't think Grady and Julio are one-timers, anymore; in the 2016 episode, "The Burns Cage", Smithers began dating Julio.

Why couldn't she just come out as Bi, instead of being A 100% Butch?!!! Seriously, It wouldn't have been hard to believe, since she DID show interest in other men before, in canon!!!

calm down, some gay men and lesbians don't realize they're gay until later. Compulsory heterosexuality is a thing. Plus, don't expect total consistency in The Simpsons.

Yeah; But I Still Wish she came out as Bisexual, since she DID go both ways in the past. and It'd be MUCH Easier to believe.

cute and funny!
but perhaps you forgot to add the new, likely gay couple: Lenny & Carl. after seeing the new episode "Whiskies Business," there have been afterthoughts about their sexual orientation. and then already suspected for some time, their sexuality ...
I do not think they are heterosexual: the heterosexual friends do not keep it that way their hand.
I believe instead that they are bisexual, or gay "repressed": they are, but do not yet know of it. at least initially, not to ruin their friendship and not to suffer discrimination of others.
it so happens, also in reality.

Thanks.
I know, their sexuality have been used for jokes multiple times in the show. I stopped watching new Simpsons episodes a LONG time ago, so I don't know anything new that has happened. Thanks for the info.
Oh and thanks for the watch too!

John is my favorite of these characters, mainly because Homer's Phobia is one of my favorite episodes ever!
I for one support gay rights, but I hate being accused of being gay myself (this asshole who goes to my school does it to me all the time ). I also hate that many people think of calling someone gay as an insult.

Yeah, I hate that too. Very few people seem to remember that "gay" originally was a synonim for "happy".
And yes, "Homer Phobia" was hilarious.

Grady and Julio are actually recurring characters as well, although not regular like Patty and Smithers. You can see Julio in several later episodes, and Grady in at least one...

Right? There are many "ambiguously gay" characters (Carl, Lenny, Martin, Milhouse...), but no maybe-lesbian characters.
So, what do you think of the picture?

clerval In reply to Violeta960 [2009-06-16 23:55:51 +0000 UTC]
LOL Yeah, did you see "Ice Cream of Margie (With Light Blue Hair)" Imo, that had one of the best Lenny-Carl moments.
I like the picture, it's a good tribute
As for the lack of "maybe lesbian" characters, I think it's just, well, how do I explain? Pardon me for the stereotype, but it does seem more socially acceptable for women to be more tactile and loving towards others than men. I've never seen two straight, male friends greet each other with a light kiss on the cheek. If something like that happened then the two would risk looking "gay" --while if two girls did it, it's just a big so what, they're just close friends.
Subtle "lesbianism" often goes undetected because it's more acceptable.
And although Patty does a hilarious job of depicting the so-gross-there's-no-way-she-could-get-with-a-dude lesbian archetype, there's still other gay girl stereotypes just waiting to be made fun of. What about the B.U.G.s? The lipstick lesbian? The radical man-hater? And why hasn't there been an episode showing a u-haul lesbian couple? (ok, I honestly don't know how they could solidly work that into a plot but I'd still like to see it)

"I've never seen two straight, male friends greet each other with a light kiss on the cheek".
Funny, I have. Many times. Maybe it's because in my country young people is far more affectionate. It's not frowned at (unless you're old and conservative), it's only seen as friendly display of affection. And yet, I was accused of being a lesbian during high school, simply because I wasn't interested on sex with anyone, and hated intimate physical contact. Sigh. Celibacy is a crime now...
Also, I made a picture some time ago about lesbians: [link] Actually, the only ones that are used for comedy are the ugly, man-hating bull dykes (like Patty, but worse), and they're treated as homophobic stereotypes by many. So I guess the writers just want to avoid causing more controversy. Lipstick lesbians are nothing but fanservice for guys, and thus, not funny. Guys acting like mincing pansies? Hilarious!

"So I guess the writers just want to avoid causing more controversy."
It sounds so noble when worded like that. With this recent push for gay rights/marriage, a cartoon that "pokes fun" at gay stereotypes feels inappropriate (oh, don't get me started on how TV series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" effected the public). I just wish the writers could exhibit that same restraint and self discipline on other subjects.. well actually, only one subject comes to mind. Remember "Sideshow Bob Roberts"? The way republicans were depicted as monsters--somewhat literally-- was in such poor taste. I know the writers strive to represent both sides of issues but I feel that a liberal bias does seem to creep up more often than not. But I digress.
And yet, I was accused of being a lesbian during high school, simply because I wasn't interested on sex with anyone, and hated intimate physical contact. Sigh. Celibacy is a crime now...
Ouch :\ Yeah I didn't date much in high school either, so most of my friends assumed I was asexual.
Here you're either straight or not interested. Gay doesn't exist. When our school finally got a GSA (it was in my senior year-- something I'm somewhat thankful for, because it was more often used as the butt of jokes among the homophobic boys than used to spread tolerance and awareness) people were confused whether or not the president was gay or not. He was very "out," but I still heard people question if he was really gay. I mean it's like, hello? Someone can be that open about it, but you're still wondering if he's straight?
