When two Gems born of the planet Barque fuse, they can create the possibility of new life. When they unfuse one of the Gems is chosen by the life and that Gem must carry this new one to form. This comes at great cost... the death of the mother gem. When Serpentine - a fusion of homeworld Gems Salt and Jade - fused with Queen Chalcendony, a new life was created. The great Queen knew the moment the fusion was broken, weeping for what was about to happen to the first stranger she had met in centuries. Salt was devastated. Jade was furious.

Salt now spends her days wandering the Queen's terrace gardens, picking flowers and looking towards the distant lake where her ship had landed... and where she lost Young Sapphire. The Gemborn consider her to be carrying a royal heir and so do not allow her to ever leave. She has little control over her form and her hair has begun to grow rapidly. Her heart is steeped in sadness and she believes her time is near. Jade is not allowed to visit her for fear that the courier will attempt to free the pregnant warrior. Many refuse to believe that Jade could have contributed to the new life and resent her constant demands to know more.
