Description
My parents entered into my room, allowing the light to trickle in; my mother sat down on the edge of my bed and patted my back. "Blaze, it's time to wake up. You've got to get ready for school." she whispered. I groaned, turned on my side and rubbed my eyes. "Did you sleep well?" They were staring at me intensely, smiling and beaming. They were so proud of me; their child would grow up to be the next Queen, the guardian of the Sol Emeralds and marry a noble knight. And yet, they wanted me to be a normal child by going to school. "Blaze, c'mon. Get up." My mother pleaded."I'm up, I'm up, I'm up." I mumbled, tossing the sheets off of me. My parents left the room quietly, closing the door behind them. I continued to lie on my bed, sighing. Every day, I dreaded going to school. I couldn't control my powers and everyone at school called me a weirdo.
There were days I wanted to burn the school down.
I walked into my bathroom, still rubbing my eyes and scrubbed hard at my teeth. My fur was sticking everywhere, making it look like I was some kind of rabid animal. I pulled my school uniform on and ran downstairs. The servants were bustling around, carrying breakfast trays and glasses of orange juice and placing them on the table. My parents were already sitting in their designated seats, patiently waiting. They watched me carefully as I sat down. That's the thing of being an only child; you're always being watched.
"I hear you are studying the early wars of our kingdom, Blaze. Are you enjoying the history lessons?" my father asked.
"Not really." I mumbled, slouching in my chair. My mother wagged her finger at me.
"Posture, Blaze. If you're not careful, you'll end up with a bad back at forty!" she warned.
"Whatever, mom." I grumbled. I couldn't stand her constant nagging. When the hustle and bustle of the servants came to an end, we began eating our breakfast. As I reached for the milk, my father slapped my hand.
"What's the first step, Blaze?" I sat back in my seat, rolling my eyes. "Ask if someone can pass the object to you. You do not lean over your food. Second, you should ask a servant to pour a glass for you." I groaned, holding my head.
"Can I just get some milk please? Every day, you lecture me over the stupidest things." I interrupted. He blinked.
"Perhaps it is because you don't listen." My mother said, quickly. I leaned forward and snatched the milk bottle from my father's hands.
"Perhaps it's because I don't care . I'm not an invalid, I can do things myself . I don't need anyone else." I said, mimicking her voice.
"Ah, but perhaps someone might need your help." My father said. I slammed the bottle on the table, making our plates bounce.
"Help with what? Blowing up things? 'Cause I'm really good at that!" I said, plastering a sarcastic smile on my face. "The world doesn't need my help just like I don't need their help." My parents stared at me, awestruck, and grimaced.
"You're so naïve, Blaze." Mom murmured, looking down at her plate. " So naïve." I rolled my eyes again, trying not to hide it this time and continued eating my food. There was a knock on the door and my father stood up. The doors opened and our head servant approached.
"Your highness, there is a lost boy outside." he announced.
"Well, what does he want?" my father asked.
"He wishes to come inside, sir. What should I do?" the servant asked.
"He obviously doesn't know his place in society; leave him out." Father replied.
"But sire, I think he's been lost for days on end; he's awfully thing and filthy. He needs serious help!" the servant argued. I swiftly excused myself from the table and hurried to the main lobby of the palace. Sure enough, there was a boy standing there, gazing around the room in amusement. I caught his attention, and waved as he stared at me with a glazed over look. He mimicked me back and tried to smile.
"Hi." I said, gently. The boy flinched at the sound of my voice. "Are you hungry?" He continued to stare at me blankly, and nodded. I gestured to the dining hall. "Well, come along then."
"Blaze," my father shouted. "Did you let this boy in?"
"No! He was already in here when I came here. He needs help, dad. Look at him." I answered. My father slowly looked up at the boy cowering in the corner. "We can't leave him alone, he'll die out there."
"Fine." Father nodded to the boy. "Come along, now. We haven't got much time." He walked away; the boy took my hand, frightened.
"It's okay. My father may seem intimidating, but he's nice on the inside." I reassured. I showed him the way to the dining room and pulled up a chair for him. As he sat down, I slid my plate over to him so he could eat. Mother glared at me, but I ignored her. "Go ahead; eat." The boy stared at his plate and grabbed handfuls of food, shoving them in his mouth. My parents gawked at him, disturbed that he was so rude . "It's delicious, isn't it?"
"Does he speak?" my mother asked.
"I dunno, but he seems to understand English." I answered. I turned to him as he snatched another roll from the basket. "What's your name?" He stopped, turned to me and chewed his food silently. A small, meek smile grew on his face. "Do you have a name?" He nodded.
"Silver." he whispered. "My name is Silver."
